According to this, THQ has formally announced Red Faction: Guerilla, the third in the Volition shooter franchise. The game is to be third-person, as was seen in the first screen yesterday, a departure from the FPS format of the previous two games.

The game's environment is described as "open-world", and is set 50 years after the first game. In a nutshell, you're a freedom fighter up against the opressive Earth Defense Force (EDF) on Mars. Expect plenty of destruction and deformation.

"Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick," said Volition president Mike Kulas. "With a new third-person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."

Red Faction: Guerilla will ship for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 during THQ's fiscal year 2009, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009.
