From Software makes "the kinds of games we want to make"

Dark Souls, Armored Core V and Steel Battalion developer From Software isn't interested in cashing in on the latest trends.

"From Software's philosophy is not to get caught up chasing what's popular, but rather to make games based on what we value," managing director Eiichi Nakajima said in a video tour of the developer's offices.

"It's our company's most basic principle. Instead of saying 'this other game is a hit so let's copy it', we put enormous emphasis on simply making the kinds of games we want to make."

Interesting, Nakajima noted that he hadn't expected the slow burn bestseller Demon's Souls to be such a hit.

"The most important thing I want a player to experience when playing our games is a sense of achievement," he added later, an attitude which has found resonance with many fans of the challenging title.

Other interesting snippets from the video include the fact that From Software is now 25 years old and employs 200 staff, with about 80 percent in development.

The developer has its own in-house motion capture studio, and ropes staff into acting for animations. The studio also makes a joking claim to Japan's smallest sound booth.
