Call of Duty: Modern Warfare might have cross-progression, and it might not.

The promise of cross-play support often brings a tonne of questions from fans. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward has already clarified how the game will handle the different platforms, but one major mystery remains.

That being cross-platform progression, which is often not a guarantee even for the games that support cross-play. Cross-progression essentially means that you have a single account identity used across the different systems for unified progression – similar to Fortnite, Dauntless and a few other games.

In Modern Warfare’s case, there’s a reason why Infinity Ward has yet to clarify if the feature will be supported. Multiplayer co-design director Joe Cecot was asked on Twitter whether game progress will transfer between platforms.

Unfortunately, Cecot couldn’t provide a definitive answer, promising more details in the future. “Still figuring this out,” said Cecot.

Those who attended the multiplayer reveal event last week mentioned seeing two friends lists, one tied to your console and another to your Activision account. A universal friends list typically goes hand-in-hand with cross-platform progression, so the feature is indeed being worked on.

Platform policies, however, may end up holding it back, so don’t get your hopes up just yet.

The Modern Warfare beta will support cross-play. Hopefully, by that point, Infinity Ward will have figured out the rest and players will also get to experience cross-progression.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out October 25 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
