Starcraft: Remastered will release on August 15, and looks very faithful to the original

Starcraft: Remastered finally has a release date, and new details and screens have emerged.

Starcraft Remastered ProtossHD

Starcraft: Remastered, announced back in March, is not a radical reinvention of Starcraft - it's essentially taking Starcraft and its expansion, Brood War, and updating them to look less rubbish on modern monitors.

Earlier this year, the original Starcraft was updated to ver 1.8, and made free to own. This is still the case, but Blizzard is hoping to entice fans to pay for the new Remastered version.

According to the press release, features include:

  • Full graphical upgrade of the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion
  • Widescreen UHD support for up to 4K resolution
  • New matchmaking and leaderboards
  • Player profiles that track individual statistics
  • Cloud saving for campaign progress, hotkeys, and replays
  • Higher fidelity music and sound
  • Switch between Remastered and the original StarCraft with the click of a button

Blizzard has also released side-by-side shots of each of the game's three races - , and Zerg - in both HD and SD for you to compare.

Pre-purchasing the game will net you a few extras in both Starcraft: Remastered and Starcraft 2. In Remastered, you'll get three unique building skins - the Char Hive, the Korhal Command Center, and the Aiur Nexus - for preordering. It'll also grant you the Alexei Stukov co-op commander and three unique portraits in Starcraft 2.

The game will be available on PCs and Macs, and will be localized for several regions, including English, Brazilian Portuguese, European and Latin American Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and simplified and traditional Chinese.

Starcraft: Remastered will be available for $14.99/£12.99/AU$21.95.
