Danish studio Full Control has said it will no longer develop new titles once it is finished with Space Hulk: Ascension.
“The release of Space Hulk: Ascension will be our last,” founder and CEO Thomas Hentschel Lund told NordicGame (thanks GI.biz). “Even though we will not be producing any more content after May, I want Full Control to continue selling the Space Hulk and Jagged Alliance games and providing community support for several years to come.”
After a round of layoffs at the end of 2014, more are expected as development winds down; however, Lund said the company will retain a small staff in order to provide aforementioned support for existing titles.
“After releasing ten games with considerable critical and commercial success, we simply wanted to stop when we were at the top of our game,” he said. “My budgets only run until April, and renegotiating a new exit agreement with our investor took three months.
Lund said the company still owes on a loan from CAPNOVA, a Danish game investing firm, and the “loan costs alone took away too much money to sustain a production team.”
Along with the difficulty of maintaining a staff on limited funds, Lund also said competition in the PC space was also a factor in the decision to close.
“The proliferation of PC games and an increase in the amount of medium-sized studios pitching for projects makes it hard to balance burn rates with new funding while also delivering the game in production,” he said. “We simply did not have that last 1% of luck securing a new signed project in time, even with several pitches having been greenlit.
Lund said he has also taken the position of head of production at Sybo Games, which housed in the same office building as Full Control.
