"Small number" of lay-offs hit EA Montreal

EA's Montreal studio has been hit by lay-offs, although no major projects seem to have been affected.

A "small number of employees" have lost their jobs as a result of restructuring.

Gamasutra reports EA's mobile team will take the heaviest hit, which is interesting given Blake Jorgensen's enthusiasm for tablets.

"We made a staffing change in our Montreal studio to align with our current development and service plans," EA said in a statement.

"A small number of employees were impacted, and we are working closely with each of them to ensure the best transition possible."

You may be nervously remembering that BioWare has a second Canadian team at EA's Montreal office, but it looks like they haven't been affected.

"The teams at EA Montreal, including BioWare, are working on exciting new projects, and EA is committed to developing great games in our Montreal studio," EA said.

EA Montreal is best known for Army of Two, although the team behind 2013 release The Devil's Cartel is Visceral Games' Canadian offshoot. Apart from that it seems to be a jobbing studio, mostly handling portable ports and add-on content.

We don't know what EA Montreal in general is working on at present, but BioWare Montreal is working on the next Mass Effect, and Visceral Games has a Star Wars game on the go which its Canadian team may be assisting with.
