Game Masters exhibition coming to Sydney Powerhouse Museum

Over 100 games will be playable during the Game Masters exhibition at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum when it opens in December.

Game Masters, which attracted over 170,000 visitors during stint in Melbourne and Wellington, aims to 'celebrate the most influential video game designers and showcase the most groundbreaking games' across arcades, consoles, PC and mobile.

The show is divided into three segments:

  • Arcade Heroes: focuses on the seminal arcade games of the late 1970s and early 1980s and spotlights pioneering designers such as Shigeru Miyamoto (Donkey Kong), Tomohiro Nishikado (Space Invaders), Ed Logg (Asteroids), and Toru Iwatani (Pac-Man).
  • Game Changers: explores the work of the most influential game designers who have had a major impact on shaping the medium as we know it, including Yuji Maka and the Sonic Team (Sonic the Hedgehog), Nintendo (Super Mario Bros), Blizzard Entertainment (World of Warcraft) and Paulina Bozek (SingStar).
  • Indies: reveals how independently produced games are leading the way in game play and aesthetics including Halfbrick (Fruit Ninja), Markus Persson (Minecraft), Rovio (Angry Birds) and many others.

As well as small display stations, the exhibition also offers large-scale interactive displays and includes Yu Suzuki's full-body 1980s arcade games, including Out Run; Dance Central 3; four-player Real Racing 2; and a 3D display of Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Child of Eden.

Game Masters will be in residence at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum on Harris Street, Ultimo. from December 13, 2013 through May 25, 2014. The showfloow will be open every day from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, and tickets will set you back $22, with various concession and family options available. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketek.
