Obsidian Entertainment’s Project Eternity Kickstarter campaign, which requested $1.1 million, has ended just short of a $4 million stretch goal.
The project closed moments ago with 73,968 backers contributing $3,986,139 to the RPG’s development.
Obsidian had promised to add one final stretch goal if it reached $4 million – “enhancing the whole game”.
“We will use live instrumentation for the soundtrack, add developer in-game commentary, and use every dollar between $3.5 million and $4 million to enhance the game,” the developer wrote in an update to the campaign page.
“Also at $4 million Chris Avellone will be forced to play Arcanum.”
It’s not yet clear whether pledged made outside Kickstarter will be included in the tally; Obsidian has received at least $140,000 through PayPal, which would pop it over the edge.
Project Eternity is an old-school RPG in the style of classic Black Isle games such as Icewind Dale, Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment. Many of Obsidian’s team members are veterans of the defunct studio and its contemporaries, notably famed designer Chris Avellone. It is the most successful project ever funded through Kickstarter.
