Tomb Raider’s gotten new details from the latest issue of Game Informer as well as new screens from what appears to be the E3 gameplay trailer.
The new reboot will throw out the old linear platforming structure the series has been known for. Crystal Dynamics instead wants the player to choose their own path throughout the game.
“We’re now giving the player the opportunity to go into a space and choose their own path. Where we take you across the ledge of the B-52 bomber, that’s a tutorial,” said the studio in the mag.
“Once you move away from the plane, everything is basically open, dynamic traversal where the player has the freedom to roam around a jump from location to location with ease.”
While that may be the case with gameplay, it isn’t the same with its story, though.
“There is linearity to the story – you have to go from point A to point B – but there’s junctions in between where we want the player to feel like they’re real explorers,” said Crystal Dynamics.
Game Informer has said in the latest issue there are non-linear hubs the player can return to during different times of the day.
Players will get to control Lara even during jumps. That means steering her whilst she’s in the air, control of her direction and control her speed during jumps.
Tomb Raider will feature an XP system that will allow the player to upgrade Lara’s abilities when she comes across what’s called in the game as base camps. Upgrades mentioned include extra arrows for her bow or the amount of speed she fires.
