MS: “We have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360″
Xbox Live director of programning Larry Hyrb aka Major Nelson has posted on his blog that Microsoft has “no plans” to introduce a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360.
It comes as earlier this morning, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer seemed to have confirmed that an add-on for the 360 would be forthcoming. However, Hyrb says Ballmer was actually referring to accessories for the PC.
“During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-Ray and the Xbox 360. I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360.”
Consider the matter closed.

Datel unhappy about 360 third-party memory unit barring
Datel’s expressed “disappointment” at Microsoft’s decision to disallow use of third-party 360 memory units in the console’s November software update.
“We are following this issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else,” a rep told CVG.
“If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we’re disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice.
“Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official Memory Unit.”
Major Nelson said earlier this week that only Microsoft memory units will be supported after the update goes live.

We don’t care if this is old. Nelson told HipHopGamer at E3 that PS3′s going to be gathering dust soon thanks to Metal Gear: Rising going multi-plat.

“That’s all I want to say.”
You must watch this video. At 6.20 Nelson’s asked, “How was you able to whip the Wii’s ass?”

360 update to ditch non-MS memory units
Nelson’s confirmed that unMicrosoft 360 storage devices won’t work with the machine when its November software update goes live.
“One of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360,” said the exec.
“If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to ‘back it up,’ you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update.
“If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.”
Nice.

Shaun White and C&C3 added to Live GoD
Nelson brings word that Shaun White Snowboarding and Command & Conquer 3 have now been added to 360′s Games on Demand service.
There’s no pricing through there as it varies by region. Looks as though you can’t get C&C3 in the US, for some reason. Take that, Americans.

Live ads will enhance, not interfere, says Microsoft

Following news yesterday that Microsoft was planning in the incorporate ads into Xbox Live in the coming year, Major Nelson’s gone on the record to say the introduction won’t get in your way. Phew.
“I need to let you know that you don’t need to worry about a huge influx of ads across the dashboard,” the exec said.
“One of our core principles is to enhance, not interfere with the gaming experience, and we work directly with our partners to only deliver experiences that are relevant to the Live community.”
Apparently the ads are going to be an “organic” part of the dashboard.

Greenberg: MS E3 was “historic” – Sony did a “good job” too

Xbox 360 product boss Aaron Greenberg has said he believes Microsoft’s E3 performance was nothing short of “historic.” He also revealed that he owns a PS3, plays games on it and reckons Sony did a “good job” in LA earlier this month.
“Last year there were so many big games that we showed. We had Resident Evil, we had Gears of War 2, we had all the big blockbuster and people were like, ‘how are you gonna top that?!’ – and we did,” he told Major Nelson during a podcast interview.
“A lot of people thought it was the best E3 we’ve ever had, I definitely think it was historic. We dreamed of opening with The Beatles and closing with Steven Spielberg and it happened.”
“E3, I think, returned to all it’s glory,” Greenberg continued. “[However], it was the first year in maybe five years that I couldn’t get to the Sony and Nintendo conferences.
“I watched on TV both of them in their entirety but yeah, it was insane. I sent one of my staff and he reported back and yeah, it was good, I thought they had a good show, I think Sony did a good job.
“I hope I don’t get in trouble for saying this, but I’m pretty open in that I own a PS3 and I play games on it: I’m a gamer.”
