Nier: Automata director Yoko Taro is quite the character, as you may have gathered from his video announcing the Day One Edition t-shirt for the game, and his comments that his contribution to the game was “all poop”.

In toco toco tv's latest episode, Taro begins by discussing working with Platinum on Nier: Automata, where he took the opportunity to get a bunch of his games signed.

He also talks about the nostalgia of pinball machines and how they bear a similarity to his game design, all the while wearing his Emil mask.

"People who play my games, I believe that many of them are a bit odd," he says. "Those people tend to look outside major ways of playing or entertainment.

"My lifestyle is rather 'special'," he continues. "I do not like to travel, nor to work out, I don't get any pleasure from it.

"Instead I would rather stay in my room in the dark and play or think. Personally, I find it more meaningful."

If he's doing that in a pair of PJs that are long overdue a wash, then he and I are on the same page.

"I am living doing what I want to do. I love making games, or to write stories. I almost don't have any hobby besides that."

On the subject of making the Nier games, Taro says that it was - in part - due to triple A games of today.

"Looking at AAA titles, of course I find them beautiful and interesting, but after 20 minutes of gameplay, I wonder whether it is going to be the same for the following 20 hours. I am a bit tired of this.

"If possible, I would like to make games that are unexpected, games that keep changing form. This is the mindset I had when I created the first Nier game, and it is present in Nier: Automata as well."

It's an interesting look into Yoko Taro's philosophy and approach to gaming, and at under 15 minutes, you should make the time to give it a watch.
