Sony: 6.4 million PlayStation 4 units shipped in the latest quarter

Sony Corporation has had a good financial quarter, mainly due to the sales of PlayStation 4.

Sony has published the financial results of the third quarter of the fiscal year 2014, which covers September 1 through December 31. The company made a 89 billion yen profit overall. PlayStation 4, along with the increased number of PlayStation Plus subscribers, are the main contributors.

PlayStation 4 shipped 6.4 million units and was accompanied by 147 million in game sales, resulting in the Game and Network Services division seeing an increase in sales and operating income over the same period last year.

There was a 16.8% increase in sales overall, which Sony attributed to increased sales of PS4, "significant" increase in network sales and a favourable impact of foreign currency exchange rates.

PlayStation 3 and other handheld systems saw a decline in hardware and software sales. Despite that, PlayStation 3 managed to sell 1.1 million units during the quarter. In addition, sales of PlayStation TV came in below expectations.

Sony had revealed back in January that, as of that date, PlayStation 4 sales totalled 18.5 million units, which would undoubtedly include the fourth quarter.
