WoW: Warlords of Draenor sold over 3.3 million copies on day one, Activision Blzizard announced today.

The fifth World of Warcraft expansion drove the subscriber base up to 10 million players, with growth in all major territories, the twin publisher said.

That figure includes players using the one month free subscription that comes with the expansion. At last check in, WoW subs had climbed over the last quarter to 7.4 million, so it looks like most of the new subscriber numbers since then are in this category.

In its press release, Activision Blizzard acknowledged Warlords of Draenor's launch woes and said Blizzard worked "round the clock" to fix them. Warlords of Draenor owners have been offered free play time as compensation.

"We're thrilled that so many players jumped in to play Warlords of Draenor on day one and are having a great time with the new content," Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said.

"We poured a lot of hard work and passion into this expansion, and we appreciate all the kind words from players and the overwhelming support they continue to show for World of Warcraft."

AT its peak in 2010, World of Warcraft boasted 12 million subscribers.
