Warning: this new Binding of Isaac item may make you tear up

The Binding of Isaac's newest item is a small tribute to a much-loved pet. Bring a handkerchief.

The Binding of Isaac is a rogue-like shooter in which your success depends, in part, on what equipment you find on each randomly generated run. Creator Edmund McMillen has a huge imagination, and has continued to create and add new items to the game.

The latest one, detailed on McMillen's blog, is called Guppy's Collar, named for his family cat.

"Last week on the anniversary of the day we got him, Guppy passed away. It's hard to avoid the fact that such a significant part of our lives who was never intended to exists was with us for 12 years and left on the anniversary of the day we first saw him," McMillen wrote.

"It’s impossible to put into words how significant Guppy was to both of us, he was our first baby and we both loved him greatly. 12 years feels like a short amount of time but I'm so grateful for the time I got to spend with him, our little ghost kitty.

"In his honor this week I’ll be showing a Guppy Item, Guppy’s Collar."

The collar grants a 50% chance of resurrecting, which ... I have something in my eye, excuse me.

The Binding of Isaac is available now on Linux, Mac and PC, and is on the way to Vita.
