The 3DS is going great guns at the moment

Nintendo has released updates sales figures for its best 3DS games ahead of the NPD’s July release – and it’s all good news.

Nine 3DS titles have cracked the million unit sales milestone in the US to date, the company said, drawing on NPD data:

  • Mario Kart 7: 3.48 million
  • Super Mario 3D Land: 3.09 million
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2: 2.28 million
  • Pokemon X: 2.10 million
  • Pokemon Y: 2.01 million
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: 1.39 million
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 1.36 million
  • Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon: 1.33 million
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: 1.09 million

In fact, Nintendo said, four of the best-selling software SKUs in the NPD’s July charts are 3DS games – Tomodachi Life is in at fifth, Pokemon X is in an eighth, Pokemon Y just behind it an ninth, and Mario Kart 7 sneaking in at tenth.

Take that with a grain of salt, though, because when cross-platform SKUs (ie, practically everything else) are included, the chart will look very, very different. Stay tuned for the NPD release late today.

Nintendo also announced that Mario Kart 8 is the second Wii U title to pass the million unit sales milestone in the US. Worldwide, it hit that milestone in June, and we’re pretty sure it’s actually sold over 2 million globally.

I guess the point of that highlight was that it’s the second Wii U game to do so, after New Super Mario Bros. U, and that Wii U sales are on the upswing. Nintendo said that Wii U hardware sales have increased 60% and software sales have jumped over 135% in the first seven months of 2014.

Note: The sales figures in this article apply to the US only, and are drawn from NPD data. This was not sufficiently clear in our original article, which has since been updated.
