In a press release sent today, Nintendo announced that the number of sales is based on internal estimates for Japan, Europe and The Americas. The firm did not however specify if the numbers represent the games shipped to retailers or sold thorough to consumers.

Older Mario Kart titles have averaged more than 14 million units per title, according to the firm.

"Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers," said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata. "With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season."

If you're still on the fence about picking up a copy of the game, you can have a look at Dave's review, he enjoyed his time with it.
