Take a virtual tour of an Unreal Tournament redux map

The team working on the new unreal Tournament has shown off concept art for a work-in-progress map.

In the video below, Chris Perna, art director, details how he’s aiming for a “sci-fi industrial look”. As you can see it has a lo-fi sci-fi vibe similar to The Creative Assembly’s Alien: Isolation.

Watch the video below for a little tour of the environment and lots of insight from the art team.

Well fuck me, that looks gorgeous.
Considering my last memories of Unreal Tournament date back to a demo from the late 90’s, this is quite the upgrade.

I’m worried, they’re buzzwording realism. That’s not what Unreal Tournament was about, that’s more Quake’s area, to a degree. UT was about being as ridiculously goofy as possible within the confines of what could be believable. Even UT III had that going for it, because it was often very silly. Especially with the rocketboarding lizard people and all.

UT is the game that had the flak cannon, of all things. It’s not DN3D levels of silly or anything, I’m not saying that, it didn’t throw reality completely out of the window, but it was as goofy as it could be whilst still being believable. The whole quality of Duke Nukem 3D was that it was unbelievable, UT kind of straddled that line, but never, ever flopped over into realism.

Oh well, it’ll have mods, custom assets, and custom maps. I’m sure that if the basic game mechanics are in place, the community will do the rest.
