Sony can’t keep up with demand for the PS4 in Europe

PS4 is still in short supply in Europe, with Sony mourning lost sales as it scrabbles to meet demand.

Sony hasn’t yet caught up with launch demand for the PS4 in Europe, SCE UK managing director Fergal Gara told TrustedReviews.

“We are still dealing with the day one market,” he said.

Gara said Sony is “very close” to being in a “full supply situation”, but admitted that it’s not there yet.

The situation is best in the UK, Gara said, with other European territories like Germany selling out of all stock week to week.

While Gara believes the supply issue may have cost the company some sales, he noted that although there’s no official update on sales figures the PS4 “is still selling, and selling very well”. He hopes those who might have put their purchasing plans on hold as a result of the stock shortage will change their minds thanks to Sony’s upcoming release sale.

“Anyone who may have said ‘forget about it, I will leave it for a while’, I think we have enough of a story now to say to them that they should reassess,” the executive said.

In the US, the PS4 continues to outsell the Xbox One, but we haven’t heard of any supply issues in North America since shortly after launch.

After purchasing mine I keep an eye on amazon uk just out of sheer interest… They run out regularly but then restock a few days later. Of course you can still get them on there from 3rd party sellers but some people are still trying to punt them for over the rrp.

There are plenty of PS4s in stock all over Germany now, but only since about two weeks. All the time from launch up to that point, it was indeed practically impossible to get one without having some sort of long-time preorder, though.

it is kind of weird to me, how well this thing does :D i mean, the system is great value for money. no question about that. it´s rocksolid. i bought one myself – but at the same time it still lacks games and even most system sellers in the pipeline are still long away. it´s 2015 stuff for the most part.

the ps4 UI feels unfinished and rushed to me, almost like a joke. it´s just clunky and not fun to use the machine. that part is the most disappointing one for me. the marketing buzz totally worked for them though. atm they are selling this thing on the promise but you can probably say that regarding the competition too.

the disaster of the one reveal helped sony a lot- without that, things could look very different today. ms made a huge mistake to thank their dedicated fans with a straight ´fuck you´ and sony definitley grabbed their chance for a solid counter and who can blame them – but if i look at the 3 new consoles now i think that there is a lot of potential for u-turns in this gen.

they all have potential with the wiiu even being the most promising one, games-, feature-wise – at least in my personal book of fairy tales.

i bought a ps4 for the destiny exclusive stuff and upcoming timed exclusives, yes, afraid to say, that crap worked on me with this one (plus the promise of bloodborne and the always present hope for a new medievil game). i am not interested in uncharted, little big planet, the order but i am looking forward to god of war, kh and some other stuff.

so to me, this console comes with a personal trade off because even the exclusives do not interest me for the most part. the same can be said about the xbox one and their exclusives though. in that regard the wiiu just wins hands down for me.

people who are interested in all these exclusives will get more bang for their buck obviously and it looks like many people are indeed interested in these games and that´s fine with me of course. good for them, good for playstation and in the end also good for me as a ps4 owner because it makes sure that a steady flow of content will arrive that also has stuff that i am interested in.

for now this is a destiny box with a few exclusives to look forward to for me but for the most part i will keep gaming on pc and wiiu. if i would only have a ps4 i wouldn´t know what to play atm and the stuff i would want to, would be cheaper and just as enjoyable on the last gen.

so overall, don´t get me wrong. it´s a solid system but if you look at the competition and try to be a bit unbiased you can see that nintendo really has the best first party games this far and a unique controller that actually makes sense, microsoft have really putted a lot of thoughts into the UI and the feel of the xbox experience, into making it fun to use and naviagte through their system – to use it- important stuff to me personally, while the ps4 is a very bare bones gaming box with the most competent specs. (that´s not a bad thing at all if you are a gamer though right?)

we´ll see how this gen will pan out but one thing is for sure: if sony will rest on their laurels now, they will get screwed. the competition is actually much stronger than it might look like today. what looks like a big advantage now in sales could easily turn.

the competition has great systems too and in some ways, besides some naked spec facts, more fun ones. they score points in other departments. playstation needs to catch up on these. they probably will though and if they will address these issues, they have really made an extremely smart move in planning this gen and it will prove that it wasn´t just a lucky shot.

so, overall, i don´t get the excitement for this system yet. i don´t get it – that doesn´t mean that i am calling it shit, it´s not -it´s great value if you keep it´s promising future in mind.

@polygem For me, so long as there’s 120 hours worth of gameplay when I buy a console, I’m happy. That’s like at least a couple of months worth of gaming for me.

you mean 120 hours within the first few months? yeah, i agree with that but the ps4 doesn´t have those fine gaming hours for me just yet. it will instantly change as soon as destiny is out though. i am pretty sure about that. looking so forward to that. i am happy with the ps4 now, even if i criticise that thing quite a lot. the console is alright – but i can´t help it, i expected more. the promise of the nextgen has been written all over the place in the boldest letters…and this promise hasn´t been fulfilled yet. i just can´t wait for that wow moment. it will come at some point eventually but it wasn´t there at launch for me.

@polygem If I bought one tomorrow, I’d have InFamous 2nd Son, AC4, Wolfenstein TNO,
Murdered: Soul Suspect, Transistor and Trials Fusion to play, so for me there’s already more than enough content and it’s not even the Xmas season yet :)

@polygem: I can see what you mean there, but hey, speaking of UI, did you even try Xbox one’s? It’s so slow and frankly un inspirerà that Ps4′s one looks way better, even as it is. Or at least that’s what I saw there…

sure man but i also have a pc . you can´t really blame the playstation for that though :D
i am only interested in infamous and knack atm but i am not superkeen on both, so i´ll wait for the obvious ps+ release. it´s all good though, destiny beta, then the full game in september, probably diablo III this year as well, then bloodborne in march. that´s more than enough – especially destiny will suck lots of gaming time and will breath some life into the ps4…but for now i play the ps+ indies on it – those are all good i must say though. for everything else there is the steam summer sales atm but in the end i play too much vg247 anyway.

i quite like the xbox UI i must say (minus the ads) – yes i tried it – it´s logical and clean. i just love to navigate through the tabs with the shoulder buttons ever since the old xbox dashboard.

the marketplace navigation is much much better too.

it´s not that the ps4 ui is broken or anythin. it works – quite well even – but at the same time it feels a bit empty and shallow, like a second thought.

i loved the little gameplay movie features that the xmb on the ps3 had for example – the ones that popped up when you scrolled over a game on your harddrive or a demo. loved it.
imo it just needs to become more fun to navigate through the system. it needs some things like that.

you have a lot of things to do on the wiiu too with miiverse, the communities etc. it just encourages you to play around with the system itself a little bit – i like that.

the ps4 gets to the games fast and nails that – that´s great, don´t get me wrong but i think that the ui is the part they have to improve on the most in the future nonetheless.

overall though it was probably superclever to get the system right first, to nail down the specs and internals, to make a functioning, slick ui that works, even if it is bare bones – and then improve it from there. the ui can be fixed or improved, the hardware and the controller not so much.

@polygem tbh what I tried in person was the first version of one’s UI, so it might have gotten better from there: what I recall is a windows 8-like clunky mess, and maybe since I wasn’t used to the “xbox way”, the whole ads thing was really annoying to me,
But yes, PS4′s one is not perfect, too. What I appreciated the most is its quick response in every aspect (unlike one’s), and even its overall minimalist feel… of course, it needs to be improved with some more wow factor, but the functionality is just great.

i agree. the ads are the main reason the one is a no buy for me btw.

    @polygem
All the PS4 UI needs is some fine tuning and sorting. Desperately needs a gaming section like the video app section where it is separate from all the other stuff. All those damn Indies I have from PS Plus look so cluttered together with everything. Once they fix that it’s fine with me.

“I always walk past them wherever I go”

haha, that wouldn´t be a great marketing slogan but same here – germany. they are in stock almost everywhere now. wasn´t the case a few weeks ago though. they all have slightly different packaging than the launch model had, with a worldcup sponsor logo on it.
