PS4 outsells Xbox One in the US for the fifth consecutive month

Tuesday, 17 June 2014 00:23 GMT By Brenna Hillier

PlayStation 4 once more outsold its rival the Xbox One at US retail in the month of May, giving Sony five months straight at the top of the hardware charts.

NPD May 2014 at a glance

Total sales up a whopping 52%, led by increases in both hardware and software sales.

New releases reinvigorated the charts. Watch Dogs topped.

May 2013.

April 2014.

May is normally a bit of a lull month for the games industry, but the NPD’s May report shows a sizeable upswing in total industry sales, climbing 52% year-on-year to $586 million.

Both hardware ($187 million) and software sales ($284 million) climbed year-on-year, by 95% and 57% respectively. Both jumps are explicable; this year, new hardware has given the industry a much-needed boost, and a couple of big new releases have done a lot for software.

Nintendo said the 3DS was the second best-selling piece of hardware behind the PS4. NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted that both the Vita and Wii U showed year-on-year unit sales growth, presumably thanks to a couple of strong releases for each system – Borderlands 2 and Mario Kart 8.

Mario Kart 8 really did well, taking second place in the charts despite being a platform exclusive; according to Nintendo, it was the third best-selling SKU (that means individual platform release of a particular game; so Mario Kart 8 has one SKU, and Watch Dogs has five SKUs). In terms of releases counted by all SKUs, it was second only to Watch Dogs, which seems to have lived up to the hype in terms of sales, at least.

Because this is North America, MLB 14: The Show was a major contender – it’s a pretty marginable affair in other territories, unfortunately – but Bethesda’s Wolfenstein: The New Order also sold reasonably strongly. Its position lower in the pack probably has more to do with the power of those above it than any reluctance to pick up the reboot.

It’s great to see new releases in May, normally a dead month before the summer sports release and then the drought, and Callahan noted that new launches in May 2014 sold 800% more strongly in terms of dollar sales than May 2013 launches did, and represented 50% of total dollar sales, as compared to 9% in May 2013. It was a pretty grim line-up that month, though.

We’re expecting responses from Microsoft and Sony, so stay tuned. For now, here’s the full software chart. Take a look at how far Call of Duty: Ghosts has dropped; that’s what happens when you get a swathe of new releases throughout the year instead of everything clustered into the holidays and the first quarter. It isn’t necessarily indicative of lower sales for the juggernaut shooter.

May 2014 Software top ten (new physical retail only)

  1. Watch Dogs – Ubisoft (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  2. Mario Kart – Nintendo (Wii U)
  3. MLB 14: The Show (PS3, PS4, Vita)
  4. Wolfenstein: The New Order – Bethesda (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. Minecraft – Microsoft/Sony (PS3, Xbox 360)
  6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (3DS, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. NBA 2K14 – 2K (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Titanfall – EA(PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  9. Kirby Triple Deluxe – Nintendo (3DS)
  10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

As ever, remember the NPD’s data only covers traditional retail, so online, second-hand and digital sales aren’t included in this report; in general, the industry is much healthier than these figures suggest.

PS4 is selling on price/performance, the best visuals on console multiplats, better PR, and the promise of Sony 1st party games (Naughty Dog, GoW, Gran Turismo, etc). Watch Dogs on PS4 sold about 2 million out of the 4 million total claimed by Ubisoft.

PS4 will keep selling like hotcakes based on superior multiplats alone, and bundles with Destiny and Watch Dogs. Destiny month will be huge for PS4 bundles.

PS4 rest of 2014 exclusives: The Last of Us Remake, Driveclub, LittleBigPlanet 3, Infamous: First Light, Samurai Warriors 4, Natural Doctrine, Guilty Gear Xrd, Singstar, Resogun DLC, and lots of indies.

PS4 2015 exclusives (announced): Bloodborne, The Order, Ratchet & Clank Remastered, Uncharted 4, Let It Die, Deep Down, and lots of indies.

  3. DarkSoulz

@derpex Best Visuals, poor performance. 1080p is just a PR stunt when barely any games on PS4 run at locked 60 FPS.

look at The Order 1886 next Gen? Only runs at 30 fps and 1929 x 800 resolution witch is NOT real 1080p.

E3 on Sony’s side was only about exclusive beta access and exclusive content not many real new games except for Bloodborne.

Sony’s game is up, they got nothing solid in 2014 nor had anything in 2013. Indies are best played on PC.

They can promise all they want, but they barely keep stuff real. Only noobs fell for the whole 1080p bullshit even when the world found out Killzone does not push 1080p it runs on 960×1080 at ballpark of 30fps to 50 fps.

The console is weak, but Sony knows how to fool people.

@DarkSoulz PS4 has more evidence than not that it’s more powerful than the Xbox One. If you are talking PC @derpex was talking consoles if you read the first line. It’s also sort of the topic of this article…

He’s right as well, the PS4 is selling on price and performance. There’s a reason why MS created Xbox Ones without Kinect, to be in line on price. Not much they can do with the performance thing now. While it does gain some power back without the Kinect, developer will still have to develop for consumers with Kinect, so it’s a mute point.

As for exclusives, I think it’s a wash. Nether one to me has one thats going to make me get that console. So what your left with is the cross console games, which up to now, have been running better on the PS4.

The rest of your talk about Sony fooling people and so on is gibberish, so I’ll leave that alone.

Also the ps4 is still available 3x more territories than the x1 is in. Therefore yes it will continue to sell more. Isnt that to be expected?

@bobnice you are right, it is present in more countries. However, NA was/is 360 territory, which is what the NPD sales figures represent. Most of the sold 360′s sold were in NA and UK. The rest of europe and japan was sonyland. Sony winning back NA hurts Microsoft a lot. But we will have to see how this plays out, especially with the new kinectless SKU.

There’s about 4 games on PS4 that aren’t 1080p+. 1.84TF GPU in a console is not weak. Wait for Naughty Dog to show what it can do.

There have been a lot of Marketing bluffs involved this gen again…but for 399€ you are getting decent systems.
I personally still think that owning a WiiU and PC is the smartest solution that gives you the most varied, fun and visually pleasing gaming experience – but i will buy into a One and/or PS4 anyway at some point – Just because: Games.

  14. reloaded17

“Sony winning back America”… “PS4 selling on performance and best visuals”… “Sony selling on better exclusives”… We are 6 months in! ok 7 months, whatever. Who cares?! Sony is only “winning” now because its $399 compared to $499! Its winning because of the PRICE! Of course its “winning!” It better be winning! iIf the xbox was $399 and the ps4 $499, guess who would be “winning?” The XBOX would be winning! Now that the xbox is $399 we’ll start to see these numbers equalize. Especially later in the year when MS’ exclusives start to release. There are buttloads of loyal 360 owners who haven’t upgraded yet because of the price. Are there those who purchased a ps4? of course! it was $399! but it is sooooo early in the game and there are tons of 360 owners who are still waiting to upgrade. All this bullshit about Sony winning because it has the best visuals blah blah blah… the differences are minor and in the coming months we’ll be seeing the games look even more and more alike. With the new sdk being released and dx12 coming out in a year or so, there will be no difference. the xbox may even have better visuals if all the optimizations of dx12 come to fruition. The exclusives will be the only differentiating factors. Whichever exclusives float your boat should be the system you choose. Saying one system has better exclusives than the other is ridiculous. Its subjective. Just because one person thinks LBP3 and Drive Club are superior to Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizons etc etc doesn’t make it truth. There are tons of people who cant wait for the next Halo or Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Forza, Fable etc etc. Buy the system or systems with the exclusive YOU wanna play and enjoy the fuck out of it. Both systems are worthy next-gen systems.

  15. Dragon

As always, more talk about “but my system is better” rather than actual numbers in front, coupled with some make-believe delusions like ” ps4 is still available 3x more territories than the x1 is in” which matters as much as a fart since both are available in all major markets and console market is heavily skewed towards big markets.

Well, whatever floats the boat of hardcore fans.

Btw, Wii U sold about 60k for the month, ok numbers considering its already a failure.

    #15 9 months ago
  16. polygem

Seriously, sales are interesting and all but calling out winners and failures this early in a gen is just naive. It also is a bit annoying if you ask me, especially when people try to take these sales to “prove” their winning/ losing “facts”.
This all can change, will probably change. As always, these sales show you a status quo, maybe a trend but really not more.

  17. The_Red

    PS4 sold around 195k (Between 200 and 190k).
    XB1 sold around 75k (Between 80 and 70k)
    Wii U sold around 65k (Between 60 and 70k)

Overall, rather good numbers for XB1, especially after the Kinect announcement. Somewhat disappointing numbers for PS4 considering both MLB and Watch Dogs came out. Unimportant numbers for Wii U since Mario Kart 8 only tracked for 2 days.

NPD for June is gonna be awesome. XB1 fueled by price-drop vs Wii U fueled by Mario Kart vs PS4 (fueled by word of mouth?).

    @The_Red ,
    PS4 ~ 197k
    3DS ~ 97k
    XB1 ~ 77k
    Wii U ~ 61k
    360 ~ 57k
    PSV ~ 56k
    PS3 ~ 36k
    Wii ~ 11k
Via neogaf. Vita sells nearly as much as Wii U despite having only having a bad port vs. MK8. Both numbers are pathetic though.

Resolution or fps are not a measure of next gen. They are worthles compared to new gameplay experiences provided by new engines eg. mgsv, ufc, swbf, nms and maybe uc4, which will probably be the best looking game of all time regardless of the weaker hardware in comparison to over 700€ pc`s.
And, of course, sony is good at foolin people :) but i think it is a pretty good deal to buy a console that beasts pc’s from a 400-700 € price range. Not bad at all actually.

I am both a pc gamer and console gamer and I can honestly say that there is not that much difference in 600€ pc and 200€ ps3. Only some minor things. And my ps4 games looks easily the best. But ofcourse if one has 1500€ pc it is a beast compared to ps4 but games doesnt still look different enough to pay over 1000€ for a such “small” difference. But pc has its perks and so does ps4 and they are both great systems but my personal opinion is that onsoles just have better games and they are the only thing that matters not supersampling nor AA .

@Reddpayn “Resolution or fps are not a measure of next gen. They are worthles compared to new gameplay experiences provided by new engines eg. mgsv, ufc, swbf,nm”

LOL AT THIS retarded comment. By new engines? Ok. Show me what these engines have new compared to what Did Crysis on the PC in 2007?

I’m sorry. Battlefront? Battlefront on the PC by that time will be not just in 1080p but in 4K already with max graphics.

60 fps and 108p is always important regardless of how amazing is your engine.

and don’t let m,e start talking about Star Citizen or you will be put in to the ground so hard…

    #22 9 months ago
  23. mxmassef

By engines redpayne did not mean grapcich. He meant gameplay and better ai etc.
For example he new ufc is much more realistic and better game than old ones because of its enchanced pshysics and moves. And the old gen couldnt have done things like that. Just like the difference between gta sa and gta iv is all about the euphoria engine and grapchics of course.

    #23 9 months ago
  24. Reddpayn

Yes, starcitizen is a good example of a next gen game with next gen GAMEPLAY. And im not talking about GRAPHICS. Im talking about new features that CHANGE gameplay like from gta sa to gtaiv( the euhoria engine with realistic body ragdolls) from ps3`s ufc to ufc 2014 which has the new engine which provides a huge leap in hit effects and overally changes the way the fighters interact with each others and makes it drastically more “realistic”. And the mgsv`s new kojima engine(not gonna start to write all the changes :) ).
So i mean that its not “next gen” to start to play a game like crysis 3 100fps 4k when the game itself is just the same game as c1 was GAMEPLAYWISE. Games like starcitizen werent possible on older hardware but now they are (on ps4 too :) like the dev said ) and it is a new gameplay experience unlike crysis3 or metro or killzone.

I am both a pc gamer and console gamer and I can honestly say that there is not that much difference in 600€ pc and 200€ ps3. Only some minor things.
Minor things? Riiight. My 500€ PC plays Battlefield 3 on 64-player maps in 1080p on Medium details with 50 fps average. PS3 chugs on 24-player maps in 720p supposedly in 60 fps and it looks far worse than 720p/Low on a PC.

You call that minor, I call that a gaping fissure.

    #31 9 months ago
  32. Llewelyn_MT

P.S. PS3 has 512 MB shared DDR3 memory. “500€ PC” has 8 GB DDR3 system RAM and at least 1 GB video RAM, usually GDDR5. There is no way in hell a PS3 game can look better to a PC game for this reason alone, unless your PC is more than 3 years old or has no dedicated non-basic graphics card.

    – i’m a fan of Sony exlusive titles
    – most of my buds play on this platform, and i play a lot online
    – it’s a fast plug and play system, focused on gaming

And yes i have also a gaming PC. But play much less on PC , since my real life buds are on ps4 and i have 2 herniated discs that give my dsicomfort mouse + keyboard

Either that or a smart console gamer.

Do people not see the pattern?

Console gamers – have no option but to play at a set resolution and framerate, likes to say they do not care about resolution and fps because they are in denial or know no better.

PC gamers – You will meet no PC gamers that think 30fps is ‘filmic’ and will always side with the arguments ‘higher resolution and framerate is always better’ and ’30fps is shite in comparison to 60fps+’

Now, the people who actually have a choice are the PC gamers.
They have 720p 30fps available to them should they wish to play games like that.

But they don’t because it is widely accepted as a terrible way to enjoy games, years ago it was fine but people who have choices always want progress, and people deserve progress.

Console gamers should care about frame rate and resolution, it boggles my mind that they don’t, I kind of feel ‘Wulfy’ for saying this but I think whoever disagrees with something as objective as it is is a slave to there console/ console ‘community’.

Either get clued up on the subject or play an actual game at 1080p 60fps to experience how it is obviously a massive step up and stop denying facts.

Again, I’m talking to the ‘Drones’ of the community who are in denial and aren’t smart enough to understand, not every console gamer.

I have consoles, I know res and framerate are important.

Just thought I should clarify before any of you try attacking what I have said without actually thinking about what I have commented.

3 years old?!?!? Don’t make me laugh!

The PS3 was getting outmatched by decent PC’s within a year into its life cycle and it came out in 2007 or something.

And I loved my PS3 back then, it was my baby.
But come on, facts are facts.

@Dog4life Top notch graphic was extra in ps2 era… now every game has good graphic so pc gamers want always the max…you dont understand the meaning of PC hardcore gaming…gta 5 is master peace right but non of my friends actualy want to buy a console to play it so they wait it out just like me…thats hardcore even there is hardcore console gamers but the point is PC hardore gamers want the best because PC as a platform can give the best so why not max it out when you can….gameplay is the same graphic is what do you want to max it out….you dont seem to get it but nevertheless cheers.

    Bottom line:

    >PC for multiplats/PC exclusives like MMO’s, strategy games etc
    >XB1/PS4/last-gen consoles for their exclusives

There is no other way around it, assuming you can afford a gaming PC of course. Everything plays and looks better on PC, and in most cases with the added benefit of mods.

PC is the natural way to go at the moment, considering it has a massive library of games, and the new consoles are still costly and has pretty much no games. I don’t advise anyone buying a next gen console until late next year (unless you have cash to spend).

@Hcw87 Bottom line: PC if you play in your bedroom or by yourself; console if you play in your living room and like to share the experience with your partner.

You’re assuming you can’t hook up your PC to your TV exactly like a console. With gamepads even. Shocker.

If you’re a casual family gamer, get a WiiU.

@reloaded17 OK so while Microsoft is releasing the new SDK and directX12 Sony will be downgrading their SDK’s and un-optimising the PS4 right. No improvements to come from Sony right? lol

Well, a 400€ ps4 (1080p,30fps) vs a 1500€ pc sli gtx 780 ( 4k 30-60fps). Go ahead if your willing to PAY that much to play the same video games :)

    #43 9 months ago
  44. Gheritt White

@Hcw87 That would mean I’d have to fork out on a PC/laptop for my bedroom *and* a PC for the living room.

No matter how you slice it, consoles are more cost effective (especially if, like me, you’re mainly only interested in playing the AAA hits) and simpler to set up and maintain. FACT.

    #44 9 months ago
  45. undermyrules

@Reddpayn 4k 30fps you can do with 1 290/290x/780/780ti any of these cards….for 60 fps stable you need 3xcards at least but as i said it for the hardcore PC gamers they are willing to buy all that :D

  46. Hcw87

I think you misunderstood my initial comment. If cost weren’t an issue, a high end PC would always provide the better experience in multiplat games. If you only have 400 to spend, sure, go ahead and buy a console. I only use consoles for their exclusives though, because my PC will be able to run AC Unity, GTAV, The Division etc etc better than either console.

So these numbers don’t even cover what’s been sold on Amazon etc? Just what people walk into a store for? There would be a LOT missing!

Digital sales I think are on a slow uptake but I still feel like we are close to seeing changes made in the benefits of buying digital.
