Not everybody is a fan of playing Super Smash Bros with a Wiimote. And you won’t ever have to, not even for Super Smash Bros Wii U.

Nintendo unveiled its official Wii U Gamecube controller adapter via its video for the Super Smash Bros. Invitational for E3 this year.

Nintendo also revealed the news on its Twitter feed. “Get excited! The #WiiU version of #SmashBros. will be playable with GameCube controllers,” stated the tweet. The announcement came with a picture of the adapter, shown below.

This news is surely to be a boon to any Super Smash Bros fan, and no doubt will make the Wii U a much more tempting buy.

Super Smash Bros will be releasing on the 3DS and the Wii U sometime later this year.

Seems like Nintendo are taking quite a big step back over the Wii U and Wii control ‘revolutions’ with this.

Two obvious questions arise from this adaptor:

    1) Can players expect Gamecube games to head to Virtual Console?
    2) Can the Gamecube adaptor be used with a PC’s USB sockets?

It’s funny you should day that, I was racking my brains the other day thinking how the hell Nintendo could even expect major support with a controller scheme that doesn’t support analogue sensitive triggers – I guess this is the answer.

I should imagine the boys making Project CARS are a little more at ease now.

Guys you seem to forget the wiiU pro controller :). i’d choose it over the Gamecube controller but for price reasons, that may be nice.

I think that a bundle that has the game, adapter and that sweet looking gamecube controller would be awesome and would move more units of the game.

Yet another controller option. Silly – they should have just pushed the pro controller. Make em standard.
