Uncharted 4 developer farewells art director, narrator

Monday, 21st April 2014 23:52 GMT By Brenna Hillier

The Last of Us art director Nate Wells has left Naughty Dog, and Uncharted 4′s only confirmed character has been recast, adding to the headcount of recent changes at the Sony studio.

Wells announced his departure on Twitter, confirming a new role at The Unfinished Swan developer Giant Sparrow.

“Yes, I joined the wild, wacky, and ultimately brilliant folks at Giant Sparrow on April 3,” he said.

Wells made no comment on the reason for his departure, but it’s worth noting that Giant Sparrow was incubated at SCE Santa Monica Studio, so there is likely to be a friendly relationship between the two companies through the Sony link.

The art director is the third major departure from Naughty Dog in the past two months, with Uncharted 4 game director Justin Richmond joining Riot Games, and Uncharted series creative director Amy Hennig heading to Visceral Games to work on Star Wars.

Speaking of which, IGN reports Todd Stashwick has been booted off Uncharted 4. Stashwick provided the voice of the narrator for the Uncharted 4 trailer, and had been involved with the project for at least six months.

“They chose to recast my role,” Stashwick said. Sony did not provide comment.

The decision follows fairly closely on the announcement of Stashwick’s appointment as co-writer of Visceral’s Star Wars game alongside Hennig.

In addition to Uncharted 4, which we know almost nothing about, Naughty Dog is working on a PS4 version of The Last of Us.

Thanks, GamesIndustry, CVG.

Sounds to me like the boys in charge have egos bigger than their brains, probably because of the success of The Last of Us. If this shit keeps going on its going to state negatively impacting the quality of the game.

@2 You forget that The Last of Us guys came from working on Uncharted 2, right?
So what’s with all this talk of quality drop, when nothing, near absolutely nothing has been released on the new Uncharted? Where does anyone get this false equivalence of quality dropping because people happen to leave a studio? Sure, they held leadership roles, and it sucks they’re no longer working on the game, but stop crying that the sky’s falling while the game is still being worked on by people who have just as much experience with the franchise as Amy Hennig, Neil Druckmann, Bruce Straley, or anyone else for that matter. No one person makes a game at a AAA studio, and it’s just petulant to think otherwise.

At this point, I think it’s safe to say that original Uncharted 4 (The one with teaser) has been cancelled and the whole project has seen started from scratch.

@The_Red i would much prefer if they dropped the franchise for a very long time and go with a Last of Us sequel as well as something new.Uncharted has become stale and repetitive.Same old story, same old characters.
Maybe the rearrangement within ND will mean better games altogether rather than great interactive experiences

I say go one step further and even drop TLOU. Just focus on new IPs for a change. I really, REALLY don’t care about next Uncharted, God of War, Gears of War, Halo, Mario, Zelda and other exclusive franchise.

It’s time for console makers to create some fresh new ips. Sure, The Order is a new IP but it feels more like Gears of War London and less like a new experience.

    @The_Red i hear ya
what i think is TLoU deserves at least another game, same world, different main characters, refferences and/or appearances from the old and of course new engaging gameplay along with the old.

We all expect brand new IP’s but the thing is we don’t seem to understand they will always borrow from past well recieved ideas

The game media is becoming more and more like TMZ lol. Are we going to here about every pen that drops over there at the Naughty Dog offices?

This guy jumped from working on “Bioshock Infinite” to ND with the “Last of Us” now to Giant Sparrow. Why is this a big deal now?

And please spare me with them recasting this actor from the Uncharted trailer, allow me to take you down memory lane when ND/Sony replaced Ellen Page character from the Last of Us, remember that? Were you guys still screaming that “this game is going to be shit” then?

I wish you guys grow up and use your brains for once.
