The Last of Us takes Game of the Year at D.I.C.E. Awards 2014

Friday, 7th February 2014 00:56 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us took home a whopping ten gongs at the 2014 D.I.C.E. Summit Awards.

The Last of Us led the favourites this year with an impressive 13 nominations. It received just as much love from the developer’s peers as it did in fan-voted game of the year awards, taking home ten awards out of 24 categories.

Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time an BioShock Infinite were the only other games to win multiple awards, with two each under their belts.

During the show, Rockstar founders Dan and Sam Houser and president Leslie Benzies were inducted into its hall of fame. Arcade design legend Eugene Jarvis received the Pioneer Award; as well as his work on Williams games like Defender, he created Smash TV and influenced the development of dozens – maybe hundreds – of other titles.

Now on its 17th iteration, the D.I.C.E. Awards are an annual affair held by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences as part of the yearly D.I.C.E summit. While not as well-known as the GDC Awards, a D.I.C.E. win is considered one of the more illustrious industry awards.

    Outstanding Innovation in Gaming? Pffft.
The execution was, plainly speaking, outstanding. But innovative it was not.

You do realize this is voted by developers, right?
As in, people who know what they’re talking about compared to some random internet idiot who doesn’t even know how to use proper capitals.

Yeah all those random game developers have opinions which mean much more than all of us random internet idiots.
Take that dick out of your mouth.

    “Outstanding Innovation in Gaming? ”

It takes an absolute fool to call somebody out on there use of capitals when they themselves fail to use them appropriately.

And then here comes another idiot who is wholly incapable of voicing his own opinions.
God, sometimes I can’t help but lashing out like TheWulf when presented with such idiocy.
You must be an absolute moron if you think there’s something wrong with that.

Guys, this award as many others and as long as it is “not” internationally reknown then remains just good on Resume and likely good for the Ego boost considering its evaluated by professionals.
Now telou or any major winning games are real winners, not just fuck 1

How the hell did you get that I was incapable of voicing my own opinion from that?

I am perfectly able to voice my own opinion and do not class the opinion of a developer any higher than the opinion of any other person when it comes to judging a game.

Reading you’re last 3 post’s I have come to the conclusion that you are suffering from schizophrenia, should probably get that checked out.

let me put it this way: i disagree with everyone who thinks that the last of us is anything more than just a decent game.
i thought the game was a huge disappointment and it´s best part was the multiplayer.
noone needs to agree with this but i am sorry, i will continue to say this whenever i feel like it.
if devs think tlou is the way to go in the future, that it was an outstanding experience, innovative in artdirection (haha), story telling…then i can´t help but feel sad about it.
i think brothers – a tale of two sons – for example – has done a much better job in any of these categories. tlou is a phenomenom indeed but not because it´s such a great and innovative experience but because it isn´t but still gets so much praise.
to me this shows exactly what is wrong with this industry to others it´s only about a game that gets the praise it deserves. i´m not here to judge any of these opinions.

You know a person has a just plain sad life when he goes to almost every damn page for a game just write how he hates it.
And obviously, utter lack of self-control, but that was known already.

    Its a game.

i enjoyed the last of us. i played through it almost twice (got bored while on my second playthrough though). i especially enjoyed the multiplayer and even bought the seasons pass for it but didn´t return to it in the end. it´s a decent game that, unfortunately, misses all the potential it tries to achieve in almost every regard. especially in the gameplay department it was lacking. as a stroytelling moivielike experience it did a decent job but it was not even close to other mediums like books or movies, yet it tried to achieve that. it stole too much too while forgetting to be unique. in the gameplay department it was mediocre through and through. the mp had so much potential but again, it never really got there. it could have been so much more. there have been much better games in 2013. it´s a lot of hype involved here. and marketing. and fans. and fantasies.
