Starbound studio Chucklefish announces second project, could be open-world pirate game

Starbound developer Chucklefish has announced that it will work on a second game alongside its space-faring rogue-like. It’ll be crafted by a second team at the studio and could involve pirates.

In a blog post over on the Chucklefish site, Finn Brice wrote, “We’re going to be producing a second game along side Starbound, with an entirely new development team. We’ll be looking into hiring UK developers for this project shortly.

“This won’t slow down the production of Starbound at all, worry not, I will be assisting in the design but we’ll be working with entirely new developers. At the moment we’re still in the stage where we’re kicking around ideas, one that keeps popping up is a top down, open world, multiplayer pirate game.”

That’d be nifty! I’m glad they’re not just locking themselves into Starbound, like what happened with Terraria, as that can be a soul-sucking experience. I’m not a particularly entitled gamer, so with Starbound even as it is now, with the inclusion of mods I’m actually pretty happy where it stands and with my purchase. Providing they fixed the last of the notable bugs, they could stop development tomorrow and I couldn’t care less.

So it’s nice to see them branch out and try different things, it’ll be reinvigorating, and it’ll lead to probably more interesting content for Starbound when they come back to it, rather than simply excesses of mundane content.

And an open world pirate game?

If it’s done well, I am so on board with that! (No pun intended.)
