Tomb Raider: Definitive runs at 30FPS on PS4 & Xbox One, producer confirms

Monday, 20th January 2014 12:23 GMT By Dave Cook

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition executive producer Scott Amos has confirmed that the PS4 and Xbox One re-release will run at 30 frames-per-second.

The figure was confirmed during an interview with Eurogamer, along with a reminder that it will display at 1080p on both formats.

It follows word that Tomb Raider became profitable by the end of 2013, after publisher Square Enix branded it a failure in a previous financial report.

The game’s out January 28 on PS4 and Xbox One.

I’d much rather have 60fps than flippy flappy hair.

I’m fine with this. I always find 60fps to look a bit strange on anything other than first person shooters.

Not so definitive then is it?

The PS4 and Xbox One are not even as strong as my 2012 Asus PC.

I can run Tomb Raider at 1080p 60 FPS.

What’s the point of upgrading from the PS3 version if it doesn’t even play smoother? A different face and better hair and skin textures?

GTFO Square Enix. You guys botched Deus Ex on Wii U, and now you’re botching Tomb Raider. Should have made the game run in 60 FPS first, then all that graphics sh*t next.

I’ll just stick with the pc version, by far the cheapest and the best graphically at 60fps. What were they thinking releasing an inferior game on next gen and calling it the definitive version. lol

1080p though guys that is actually what is most important here. More important than anything else.

    A whole 10 80 pees.

What I am excited to see now is if there are any visual differences from the XBO and the PS4 version. The PS4 should have better visuals and effects if they have tapped in to the hardware.

Played it on PC and have a pre-order on the PS4 version. Going to be interesting to see how it holds up.

    @8

Look better than the PC version?

Seriously.. That’s NOT possible. It was built on a PC then scaled down for the consoles, it’s hardly going to look better… Console HW is still worse than PC.

Addenum.. sry, Console HW IS poor PC HW.

You mean the almighty PS4 with 2x processing power can’t out-pace the Xbone on this? Impossible!

So either the dev team are lazy and CBA to optimise, or the CoD team couldn’t program the Xbone properly. :P

Not surprised a bit. They keep pushing for stillshots to look best, with animation bringing up the rear. Where it counts, 720p at 60 fps is way better than 1080p at 30 fps–while playing the game. But that doesn’t look so good on ad copy, on sites like this one, or on crappy 30 fps youtube videos. Advertising trumps gameplay.

Let’s see what next year brings. No way I’m wasting my money on these consoles this year.

    Definitive Edition my ASS.

Well this says a lot about the devs for this more then the hardware. I hope they put a patch in the increase the frame rate because kinda sad to see them still shooting for the lowest denominator on an old game.

I don’t think this has anything to do with PC..so I’m lost to why you dumb fucks feel the need to compare 2 consoles to a PC. Lol get a fucking life and go play your PC.

I’m disappointed and feel the PS4 version has been gimped to match the XB1. But let’s be fair here. The PS4 will be running the game at a constant steady 30fps, not bouncing up and down like PS3, so motion will be totally smooth. HD movies run at 24fps but nobody claims they are not smooth. Fluctuations in frame rate and drops to 10fps cause stutter, not a constant 30fps.

To all you smug PC guys mouthing off, most PC gamers cannot even run the first version on max, so they aren’t going to be able to run this enhanced graphics version without an expensive GPU upgrade.

“so they aren’t going to be able to run this enhanced graphics version without an expensive GPU upgrade.”

Isn’t that basically what you done by buying one of the new consoles?

If there is an issue with consoles (which there are quite a few mind you), this is exactly it.

Too much politics involved in development. I’m assuming that PS4 is able to run this at a higher frame rate, judging by earlier titles and developer comments. However, if United Front Games and Crystal Dynamics release PS4 version at 60 fps and Xbox One at 30 fps… well you don’t want to piss off Microsoft. End of story.

Disclaimer: I don’t actually know which runs faster, but I’m sure there’s a difference between the 2 consoles (which appears to be PS4).

Well that pretty much seals it. I have every Tomb Raider game right from the start and was a massive fan. The short 20hr gameplay on this game prevented me from buying the PS3, but I was tempted to buy the PS4 version because it would run superb. Now that they have gimped its frame rate to match the weaker XB1, I’m not buying.

Crystal dynamics, your loyalties lie with MS, not your customers, so I’m done with Tomb Raider. I hope MS are giving you plenty of money for keeping them happy because I’m not giving you any of mine.

Don’t blame the xbox one version just because their programmers aren’t strong enough to make the game sustain 60 fps on the ps3: get over it. Definitive edition at 30 fps is hilarious.

You all owned PS3 last generation right?

So can you remember any Developer gimping their game for the 360 because it was running worse on the PS3?

    No? Me neither.

There is more to a system than CPU & GPU… on that note Xbox One has a faster CPU and GPU than the PS4.

Mad rambling just amounts to nonsense and doesn’t change the fact.

@23 thats actually incorrect sir… CPU and GPU wise.. The PS4 Has faster processing and produces much more Teraflops than the Sockbox One.. It also helps the PS4 has GDDR5 memory.. you may wanna check your resources buddy….

    You are wrong!
The PS4 has the stronger CPU!
    Link –> http://www.cinemablend.com/games/PS4-CPU-More-Powerful-Than-Xbox-One-CPU-According-Benchmark-Test-61203.html

Confirmed by multiplat developer “Matt”, too! On the Neogaf Forums -> http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=94264594&postcount=50

The PS4 has the more powerfull GPU, stronger CPU, better memory (GDDR5) easier-to-develope-for architecture, etc. etc.

    The PS4 is clearly stroner.
Which is the reason why all multiplats are better on the PS4!
