Xbox One: major “third-party title” to be bundled at launch, FIFA 14 possible – rumour

Monday, 19 August 2013 18:44 GMT By Staff

According to a anonymous sources, Microsoft has signed upon a deal which will allow them to bundle a “major third-party title” free of charge with every Xbox One console at launch.

The deal which is apparently confirmed for Europe (and possibly US) will allow each Xbox One unit sold in the region to be bundled with the game which market price will be around £40 or higher. This move is apparently being made to ensure that the PS4 no longer has an upper hand in terms of being £80 cheaper than Microsoft’s console.

A CVG source who is aware of this agreement revealed that the deal is part of Microsoft’s aim of adding more value to Xbox One without the need of lowering the £429 launch price.

The third-party title, although not named, is supposed to be a ‘major’ Christmas release. The report also states that it cost Microsoft millions to sign this deal, which was done to ensure that the Xbox One gets an edge on release day.

The source also added that this major title is a “unique Xbox One exclusive” that is due to be announced during Gamescom this year.

[Update] Seemingly contrary to CVG’s source’s talk of exclusives, MCV “has been told” that the Xbox One will be bundled with FIFA 14 in Europe.

This latest whisper lines up with earlier reports that Microsoft has a gamescom announcement about “Europe’s biggest franchise”.

The platform holder has also been teasing an “exciting” announcement and at least one new game reveal.

The Xbox One is scheduled to be released in November this year, although no date has been set in stone as yet.

VG247 will be there in Cologne to bring you all the news as it happens.

It’s an Xbox One exclusive, so it can’t really be any of the titles listed above.

    Shenmue 3? Oh lord.

I bet it’s a stupid kinect game. lol

    #8 2 years ago
  9. redwood

one way to pick this title for Microsoft would be to see which title got the least pre-orders :D that way they can get a better deal than going after something like “gta 5″ which would probably cost them spencer’s first born.

    #9 2 years ago
  10. taternuggets

@7 Other sites are claiming the deal is exclusive to xbox, not the game. So I dunno…

A third party christmas exclusive? Now i can’t think of any: The Fighter Within? is the only one i can think of buts its not major (we don’t know) and i’m not sure if its a christmas release.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. The_Red

Now THAT is potentially a smart move. Seriously this addresses two issues:

    - They need to justify $100 price difference without resorting to that paperweight eye of sauron.
    - Any console with a bundled game benefits: Seriously, bundling Wii Sports with Wii is what made Wii the mega seller that it is.

  17. Dragon246

MS must never be underestimated. They may lack in strategies, but they can more than make up for it with sheer moolah power.

Cant wait to see whose comes out on top in this billion dollar tug of war!

Still, how is it that they haven’t announced a MAJOR 3rd PARTY LAUNCH EXCLUSIVE yet . That makes this rumor less credible, or MS PR is full of morons.
It may be that Ubisoft Kinect exclusive “Fighter Within”.

The game is called “Fighter Within”. It’s a Ubisoft Kickboxing game. It leaked last night so chances are that’s the game.

    #21 2 years ago

Needs to be a system seller, not a shitty fighter game.

If they’re smart, they’ll bundle CoD with every Xbox One sold, and they’ll overtake Sony by a long shot in the first few weeks, in the EU and US.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. loci

Don’t bother with a free game. It won’t get them anymore sales.

PS to my last post. My other guess is this is not true, just like the Kinectless console, the bundled headset (was not yet decided on when the rumour flew) etc etc…

But we’ll see. I was very skeptical about the rumour of a delayed launch, which turned out to be about 50% true.

If it’s an X1 exclusive I’d say a Kinect title. Particularly as Sports Rivals got delayed. Something to give people reason to plug it in. If the deal is the exclusive bit then Fifa/Madden is a good shout. Good to see something nice and positive coming out of the pressure they’ve been put under though.

Hold on. So does this mean those with delayed preorders in countries affected by the recent announcement now get two games? Nice for them.

Oh I also suspect it will be a title which offers a decent amount of DLC. That would have helped the deal.

Point: Ok if true why go all this way for a exclusive bundle, its a bold first move but i feel that money could go elsewhere. I can see the value in it but come on, but MS may just be 50% true because i didn’t expect the Xbox One to get delayed and MS partly surprised me on that one.

And they need to add value do keep Kinect outside the box. Tomorrow morning we will know more.

    Maybe Madden for US?

    #50 2 years ago
  51. Joe Musashi

If they wanted to add value and get enormous ROI then they could have saved those millions and bundled a free year of XBL Gold. Or maybe as little as 6 months.

That they’ll spend so much money securing content from a third party rather then dangle a Gold carrot – which would encourage further subscription adoption, inflate usage figures, get [more] people online, get them spending more cash on multiplayer content (maps etc).. ..if they wanted to sweeten the deal and make it meaningful for the longer-term that’d be the smart way to go.

I wonder if this bundled game will be delivered digitally or physically?

    #51 2 years ago
  52. DrDamn

Digital for sure. Gold people may not see the value in so much as if you are upgrading from a 360 you will likely have ~6 months to go already.

Lots of places seem to be saying FIFA now anyway.

    #52 2 years ago
  53. Joe Musashi

Would they really want to be so synonymous to the “FIFA/COD” player I wonder?

I can’t help but think that this is all very short-term thinking.

@58 It’s one thing to be seen as having games synonymous to the FIFA/COD demographic. It’s another to be handing FIFA to them for free! Perception and all that.

I think #55 has a point too. It narrows the price/value difference but it still doesn’t put Microsoft where they’d want to be. Retailers can still easily price-match like-for-like with just enough room to sell their extended warranties on top.

As I recall, major UK supermarkets will price-war on titles like FIFA and independent retailers aren’t above buying that stock and reselling/bundling it in their own store.

    Could be a bit chaotic.

  67. wildBoar

Titanfall or Dead Rising 3.. I’m guessing Titanfall, I have no clue how much it cost them but hopefully below 100M though. If EA was going to milk it dry through DLC anyways they’ll still make a nifty profit.

Man, buying all these exclusives sure does hurt the wallet huh. Over 1 billion spent already and now this.. MS has deep fucking pockets.

Of course MS has deep pockets, what OS are you using xD Of course you couple be using a Mac or Linux so apologies if you are, but the X1 could likely fall through and MS wouldn’t exactly be in trouble as a company. The same can’t really be said for Sony because they have a LOT of their eggs in the console market and gaming, but I’m pretty sure they could keep afloat well enough if the PS4 had sold poorly, look at the Vita.

Either way, they are both massive companies with lots of money to throw around, MS is just the bigger one with the larger wallet. If they are using that to fund 3rd party games then no-one should be complaining, that’s a good thing for all parties xD

@72 Probably not the most intelligent thing to post in advance of two imminent annual conferences Sony likes to use to make big game announcements.

Fluff? Like every PR release from MS since E3? MS are in serious trouble, effectively sacking the XBox boss a few months before launch and writing massive cheques* to devs and publishers to try and buy back lost support. They’ll succeed of course; if they do give away FIFA and buy Destiny exclusivity, their customers will benefit hugely and many will forgive them their most egregious recent errors.

    * almost certainly in the hundreds of millions

If it is FIFA 14, does it mean FIFA 14 will be ready for BOTH next gen consoles?

I’d love to have FIFA 14 for the PS4 launch

  77. fearmonkey

Well, that sounds great for Europe customers if true, but I hate sports games and if I bought an Xbone I wouldn’t even play it for free. Doub’t full the US would ever get a free game like that though, this is their strongest market.

  78. omakone

If this rumor is true, it really smacks of desperation on the part of Microsoft. I have seen numerous articles that have hinted that the pre-sales numbers for the XBOX ONE were below the expectations. If the U.S amazon site is any indication the XBOX ONE is getting owned. Currently the standard edition PS4 is number 10 in video games sales and the XBOX ONE standard edition is number 47.

This is great news for those that were planning to get both for the XBOX ONE, but how many additional units would Microsoft need to sell to make up the millions of dollars that they reported spent for this deal.

I love all these people claiming that MS is in trouble…. all my friends with 360′s are getting xbox ones and all my friends with ps3′s are getting ps4′s…. Both consoles will sell plenty.

MS already got a bunch of shit for addidng features that neglected the people without internet. I would assume that adding a 1 year or 6 month subscription to xbox live internet service would cause the same backlash among those people without internet because the subscription would be useless to them…even though those same people complaining would be on the internet…complaining about Internet

    #80 2 years ago
  81. Lengendaryboss

Apples and oranges: oh did those people have to check-into the internet daily to complain about the 24 check in? or was it optional to check-into the internet to complain about the 24 check in.

Don’t try to compare what you see as hypocrisy when it isn’t even it, it ain’t even close or remotely related.

  82. MCTJim

Lets see. MS gives away FIFA 14(rumored) and Sony gives away a racing that is subscription based and who is getting the backlash? Seems to me reading this, a lot of peoples feathers are ruffled…Why? a very popular game is being given for free. 60 bucks here in the states if we get the same game.

I personally wont play the game given away if its given here for free in the states, I will give it to my buddy who didnt get a day one who loves his FIFA and has never missed an incarnation.

in the end it doesnt matter. I am more than happy to play both systems..the one with Kinect and the one without it.

    #82 2 years ago
  83. sebastien rivas

I agree. A fully functional kinect game would be best and best out kinect skeptical/unknowelegeable gamers like me to get us back in xbox1 bandwagon.
Though 499 with a game that “may not” be my first choice is a bit of a gamble.

#82? Can you really be more than happy though? Or fine and dandy at the same time? Seems like a situation, that happens once, maybe twice in a lifetime, and it really doesn’t involve game consoles :D

  85. GLENN37216

What about THE USA? Do we get a bundled game ? Or maybe your skipping us because we think soccer sucks ?

    #85 2 years ago
  86. Joe Musashi

@80 That’s a good point. Though it might be somewhat moot if the free game is delivered digitally.

    #86 2 years ago
  87. Cort

@82 Sony is not giving away a free game with every PS4. Check your facts.

And they are not paying a fortune to a third party for a massive IP in order to try and make up for a chaotic run-in and probably sales well under projections.

It’s not the act, it’s the method and the reason.

    #87 2 years ago
  88. redwood

@87 isn’t drive club coming free with ps4 (yes it’s a lite version but a free game is a free game)? also you have f2p titles like warframe.

    #88 2 years ago
  89. johns

Twisted Metal, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo, Resistance, Ni No Kuni, Tales of… Games, The Last of Us, MLB the Show, Heavy Rain, God of War, Infamous, Killzone, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, MAG plus many more. OR Halo, Gears of War, Forza, Fable, PGR, Crackdown, Alan Wake and a WHOLE BUNCH of Kinect games. Yea…..real tough choice lol. Especially when you consider a lot of MS games you can go ahead and play on that one thing…what’s it called? Oh yea, a PC.

    #89 2 years ago
  90. Lv01

@88 no, as Cort said, its not giving away DriveClub away free with every PS4. DriveClub is part of the PS+ instant game collection. it just so happens that that installment of the IGC will coinside with the PS4 launch.
