Wednesday, 14th August 2013 09:19 GMT By Dave Cook

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has received a new trailer that shows a bearded Geralt saving a woman from being hanged while slaughtering a pack of ruthless guards. It’s quite epic, and you can watch it here. The game is headed to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014.

@backup What are you? You are one of the most pathetic piece of shi* I have ever come across. A stuck-in-a-basement hermit can tell that Witcher 3 is a hardcore RPG.

    Do you even play games?

From a lore standpoint it’s not very good. Witcher never go between humans and do something. There is a Witcher codex. You can’t just use magic and show it to the regular people.

I may be wrong but didn’t Geralt break all these rules previously ?

As Lovely looking and well choreographed as that was I personally think CGI trailers should be banished forever…

Was really excited that it was going to be gameplay…bah!

@24 Well Geralt is neutral in general but throughout the games you can choose how much you want to become involved. In this video, he chose to interfere and there will probably be major consequences for it.

@32 – Maybe. But notice, that Geralt probably didn’t hear that. So maybe he was thinking he’s rescuing innocent women :) That’s why Witcher world is awesome.

    @24 & @25
There is NO Witcher Codex. None. Geralt invented the codex in his own mind, and when he doesn’t want to do something, he “hides” behind it and tells other people that the codex forbids it, like killing people for example.

But in an internal monologue he admits there is no such thing and that he invented it shortly after he first rode out from Kaer Morhen as a fledgling witcher, naive and full of hopes and dreams about how the world was going to be.

He saves a woman on the road from a man that was beating her, and it turns out she was his wife (if I’m remembering it correctly), and she yells at him kneeling beside and trying to help her husband at the same time. She is scared of him, instead of being grateful, so he goes away, confused, but enlightened.

In the books he often helped innocent people, like the women from Kernow in “Baptism by Fire”, and they were visibly scared of him and his companions, just less scared of them, than regular soldiers, who were raping and pillaging around the countryside at the time.

That’s just it, we don’t know if she was. Which puts a nice spin on the “saving a damsel in distress” trope. Maybe it’ll be a quest in the game and we’ll find out. :]

    Cheers from Poland.

@38: We had that already in Witcher 2, remember? Elven damsel in distress turns out to be a scoia’tael spy.

Also worth noting – Geralt isn’t typical witcher. He’s quite different, because mutations haven’t taken all empathy away from him. So he has moments when he care about other people, while many witchers are always stone cold.

  41. infernalism

Of course I remember, and many people fell for it trying to save Malena from the “evil” soldiers. Maybe this time the girl is indeed innocent?

There was also a quest about a spectre in ACT II (Roche’s Path), where a soldier allegedly killed a few young girls. At least that’s what we’re being told by the spectre. As it turns out, it was a bait for “players in shining armor” as well.

Hives…not really, Witchers are pretty much like other people in this regard, though they are more prone to becoming emotionally detached thanks to their particular occupation and primary source of income.

Just remember Vesemir, Coen, Eskel. Probably only Lambert would somewhat fit your description. What you said is kind of hinted in the books, but he is just portrayed as being more compassionate than other witchers. However, he empathises with people more than most regular humans by far, and he doesn’t just sit around, when someone is wronged. He takes action, as you can see in this very trailer (if that’s Vesemir with him, then he didn’t want any trouble).

In fact, that sort of behaviour is what brings him to his death in Rivia at the end of The Witcher saga (books).

Geralt is a good person by choice, and the other witchers are too, they are not devoid of empathy, most witchers are better people, than an average human. At least the witchers we know from the books.

Yeah the girl is smiling unusually much at the end there. It’s a bit suspicions. Reminds me of the Witch Abigail in the first Witcher game.

There’s a reason Geralt is pretty much the only one who does it, he’s not just any normal Witcher.

Really looking forward to this game :)
