Pikmin 3 Japanese debut produces unexpectedly modest sales

Pikmin 3′s first week on sale in Japan produced a modest number of sales well below those of the last entry in the series, despite topping the charts.

Media Create’s first week sales figures for the three Pikmin games so far are below, courtesy of Siliconera, with their initial shipment sell-through percentages in brackets and lifetime sales following:

  • Pikmin – First week: 90,000 (54.9%) Total sales: 549,000
  • Pikmin 2 – First week: 160,000 (48.4%) Total sales: 484,000
  • Pikmin 3 – First week: 92,720 (48.45%)

You’ll notice that Pikmin 3 barely pipped its progenitor in first week sales and came in significantly below the second game, although with a similar sell-through rate – suggesting Nintendo predicted the decreased sales.

This may be related to the Wii U’s lower install base, as by the time Pikmin 2 came out the GameCube had been on the market for three years. Meanwhile, as I’m sure you recall, the Wii U launched in Japan in December 2012 – just seven months ago.

That said, Pikmin 1 was a launch window title for the Gamecube in October 2001 and still managed almost the same first-week sales as Pikmin 3.

Pikmin 3 did have a few less days to register sales for its first week charts; a Media Create chart week runs from Wednesday to the following Tuesday, and Pikmin 3 launched on a Saturday. Pikmin 2 launched on a Friday and Pikmin 2 on a Thursday.

Pikmin 3 releases in Europe on July 26 and hits North America on August 4.

    The wii u game had 2 days worth of sales vs the 7 for the other games. It sold over 100k according to famitsu for the week. It sold great

    Plus, Pikmin 2 had had the same-platform-sequel advantage, there was people already playing Pikmin on GC.

    It’s been so long since the last game that it looks like a new game to most (regardless of the “3″ on the title).

    Pikmin 3 sold about as many units as Pikmin 1 in half the time. This is two days worth of sales. The sales figures are not astounding but they’re not bad, either. Do you not have editors to fact check your articles before you post them online?

    uh…. this isnt accurate….. please research and update as appropriate…

    as the 97,000 units sold was only the title’s first TWO DAYS….. not its entire first week! the title is selling tremendously! and these numbers dont even include the digital downloads, which will most likely be quite a bit given the sale going on if you download the game (you get 30% off W101)….

    the title of this article is more than misleading, its inaccurate.

    Do you two read the article carefully before pointing the finger? Compared to Pikmin 2 this title is not misleading.

    @ Legendaryboss…. yes, i saw that, i still find it a bit disingenuous…. selling ~50,000 units a day (again not counting digital downloads) is hardly “unexpectedly modest.”

    my point is, to report on something without full data available and then to make an apples to oranges comparison is lazy, sloppy “journalism”… you cant compare full week sales of past titles with only 2 days worth of data here… and then make flawed inferences based on that data (or lack thereof in this case)…. wait a week, then actually report fact-based information.

    @9 And what if you don’t have a “favourite console manufacturer”?

    The game is not a big, giant, multi-million budget title. It will make back its costs with far less sales than other franchises would need to make a profit, and that’s all that really matters.

    The whole “it has to be bigger to be better” thing gets really tiresome.

    It’s a good game that uses the Wii U controller in a fun and incentive way. At the end of the day, that’s all that should really matter, that the games are good.
