PS4 will support PS3 wireless headsets according to Sony representative

Thursday, 18th July 2013 19:23 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

PS4 will support the wireless headsets you are currently using. In case there was any doubt on the matter. This was confirmed to Polygon during Comic-Con by a Sony rep. The new console ships with a mono earbud headset. The console releases in November for $399.

    Of course…. It uses Bluetooth, just like the ps3…. Must be a slow news day to post this

    I think it’s so lame that MS didnt include Bluetooth into the Xbox one. it was a nice money grubbing move so that they could charge for those Xbox headsets the new console doesnt come with.

    The cheapest phones now have bluetooth and a next gen console doesnt…….

    #8 9 months ago
  9. G1GAHURTZ

    ^ Bluetooth headsets are awful.

    X1 has full Surround Sound audio, as well as voice chat, coming directly out of the controller.

    That’s called a next gen feature that the no other console currently does.

    @Gigahurtz

    Whats your point exactly? What next gen feature? Could you give me those specs/links please. Ive been browsing the net all over..

    X1 controller will have full surround audio? So only that is THE next gen feature you are talking about?

    PS4 has a built in speaker sorry now thats what I call a next gen feature. http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/154358-sonys-dualshock-4-controller-revolutionizes-splitscreen-gaming-and-player-location

    Ps4 controller will have stereo headset jack but thats ok in my book. Woopty doo for X1 it has full surround headset jack.

    Wow!

    Why do you people always make simple things so difficult?

    Does the Wii U controller output Surround Sound?? No!

    Does the PS4 controller output Surround Sound?? No!

    A crappy mono speaker in the DS4 is just as pointless as the one in the Wii Mote. The Speakers in the Wii U controller are no different to any other cheap speakers in a budget tablet.

    Get over yourselves! The X1 does something innovative, and no matter how angry and upset that makes you, it’s still a fact.

    And now I’ve got someone asking me why this is a good idea…

    You know what, Djoenz? Just stick to your single earbud, mono, voice chat only, headset on your DS4, and leave the new technology to the serious gamers…

    @24

    You were comparing speakers on the controllers vs what the controller supports for output for headsets. Its not the same thing. You are really just over reaching would be like me comparing a wifi vs radio.

    #27 9 months ago
  28. G1GAHURTZ

    @25:

    No, there was absolutely nothing rhetorical about my question whatsoever. It was clear and precise.

    Quote me where I said that Surround Sound was an innovation, or where I said that other systems don’t have surround sound.

    Find the words that I typed, and repeat them to me.

    That was all that I asked…

    So now you’re admitting that I never actually said that? Is this correct?

    #28 9 months ago
  29. G1GAHURTZ

    @27:

    You should read all of the comments, pb.

    First of all, I said that the X1 controller did something innovative, in that it outputs both Surround Sound audio and voice chat directly from the controller, without the need for the traditional, messy, 6 part setup needed for every other controller before it.

    Then someone else (not me) compared the new, innovative, 7.1 Surround Sound, 3 part setup of the X1 with the mono speaker on the DS4, and another person tried to say that the Wii U controller did the same thing.

    The comparisons belong to other people, not me.

    I don’t know why I have to keep pasting the same comments over and over again to the same people…

    http://www.vg247.com/2013/06/28/xbox-one-third-party-peripheral-support-in-the-works-says-microsoft/

    “2. There is actually a pretty cool innovation happening here.

    The new X1 controllers output both voice chat and digital game audio at the same time.

    That means that there is a simple 3 part system for a full, wire free, Surround sound experience:

    Headset -> controller adapter -> controller.

    The PS4 controller doesn’t do this (along with 360 and PS3). It only outputs mono voice chat, so the surround sound headset system works like this:

    Optical cable + USB cable -> Wifi/infrared receiver -> headset -> audio cable/separate bluetooth connection -> controller.”

  30. Lengendaryboss

    @29
    You said something was an innovation and now i got my answer, thanks for the delay.

    I thought you were impling Surround Sound was an innovation, so no i can’t quote you and i never admitted anything beyond this point.

    #30 9 months ago
  31. G1GAHURTZ

    Well you thought wrong.

    And you are finally right in admitting that no, you can’t quote me, and no, I never said that.

    I don’t know why you have to make things so difficult.

    Read what I actually wrote next time, instead of blindly trying to bash the X1 at every available opportunity.

    #31 9 months ago
  32. Phoenixblight

    @29

    Or you can just use a blue tooth headset that of which I own and outputs 7.1 not to mention it will work for the Ps4. If anyone had a headset they have currently for the Ps3 they can just take it to the PS4. WHere Xbox One you will need an adapter or buy a new headset altogether.

    #32 9 months ago
  33. Lengendaryboss

    @31
    Now your misreading me: no-where did i bash the Xbox One and i don’t do it blindly at every opportunity. All i did was misread a situation and had to wait for a very long time for a delayed answer to a question (which wasn’t even directed at me). Do not remember bashing Xbox One here.

    @8 Thats bashing.

  34. G1GAHURTZ

    @32:

    You can use what you want, but you won’t get the same convenience. End of story.

    Why is that so difficult to admit?

    The fact that you may own a headset, and don’t want to buy a new one, is completely irrelevant here.

    The only point is that the new system uses an innovation that no other console currently offers, which is something that can’t be disputed.

    #34 9 months ago
  35. Phoenixblight

    @32

    “You can use what you want, but you won’t get the same convenience. End of story.”

    Plug into PS3 through USB port, turn on headset, jobs done.

    Its not innovation. The difference is you are just taking the headset to a different port. It doesn’t do anything that makes the system a must have. Yay MS was nice enough to allow chat and audio to go through the controller.

    If your so tired don’t bother, no one is asking to continually debate this.

    All that link showed is me saying hmmm… and i never said that here or explained what i was referring to.

    And to be honest it is you that sparked this long debate: if your tired of having the same conversation then stop bringing it up, stop pursuing it, stop claiming something is innovation (opinion) when honestly its just something more convenient and give it a rest.

    PS: Im still not bashing Xbox One like stated at 31. If thats what you believe, honestly couldn’t care less.

    #44 9 months ago
  45. G1GAHURTZ

    @42:

    Lol!

    The headset in that link definitely doesn’t work as you described (2 steps). It actually works as I described in comment #29 (6 steps).

    You can keep searching, but I’ll make it easy for you if you like.

    It’s an impossible task that you’re trying to complete. You won’t find a Dolby Surround headset for the PS3 or any other console that doesn’t use an optical cable. They don’t exist.

    The only console that does away with the optical cable and that big, ugly receiver box that comes with the headset that you linked to is the X1.

    If you want Dolby Surround, you need those six steps, the extra wires, the extra space and the extra inconveniences.

    Seriously, this is getting boring now…

    @43:

    I didn’t mention any other thread, did I?

    #45 9 months ago
  46. Phoenixblight

    @45

    ANd you have nothing to really support that it will be even easier on the Xbox One especially one the fact that when I bought the 360 I had to reset the controller and try to sync it for an hour which resulted in it being a dead controller. You are just preaching why Xbox One is better. You and Chunk can go do your sweet nothings to each other elsewhere. THat is getting tiresome.

    #46 9 months ago
  47. G1GAHURTZ

    @44:

    1. I think you’ll find that the majority of the “long debate” is actually me defending myself against people telling me that I said something that I never actually said.

    2. And innovation in convenience is still an innovation, nonetheless. It’s a simple fact that it’s more convenient. The fact that you’re still refusing to acknowledge that backs up my claim that you’re attempting to bash the X1 by belittling its forward thinking features that aren’t available on other platforms.

    #47 9 months ago
  48. G1GAHURTZ

    @46:

    Don’t try and change the subject.

    Admit it.

    @GHz, The PS4 controller has a stereo jack http://goo.gl/H49gV few details have been given on it’s exact features but I don’t really understand your point. The XBone’s controller audio output supports both game audio & voice? Doesn’t sound innovative to me. At least Sony is using a standard here so I won’t need any adapters or specific Sony licensed headsets to use it.

    #51 9 months ago
  52. Lengendaryboss

    @GIGA
    Its still not bashing, not attempting to bash thats all in your head. Bashing is when you say negative thoughts towards something. If i wanted to bash something it would be more obvious.

    When you can get someone else to say its innovation, fine but until then its realistically really just your opinion. MS themselves never said this was a innovation, no major website brought it up. Now if you said Kinect was innovation it would be easier to believe.

    So no the *opinion that i am attempting to belittle (in your mind is somehow bashing) Xbox One is non-existant just like finding claims of your opinion is non-existant.

    #52 9 months ago
  53. spazzwan

    Sorry, it seems we misunderstood each other. When you said “X1 has full Surround Sound audio, as well as voice chat, coming directly out of the controller.” I read that as you meaning it had speakers in it.

    I admit its freaking nice to have a full surround sound output straight out of the controller.

    However its not the holy grail nor innovation IMO you claim it to be.

    Then you go bash the mono speaker oh ..You just freaking biased admit it.
    Its the way you play with words my man. If you didnt state it was a “nextgen feature”, I wouldnt have replied to your meaningless attempt to praise the X1 (while by itself is acceptable)yet at the same time bash other consoles/controllers that lack that feature.

    Er, no dude, it’s because you’re blindly defending Microsoft and everything they do. I mean like, I was all about MS this gen, but fucking hell they’ve screwed up with the X1. Every time I see a comment of yours, it’s like “NO MS ARE ACTUALLY GOOD” – at least try and look at things objectively.

    The price is too high.
    I’d have concerns with always-on Kinect and MS’s stance with the NSA.
    The original DRM was awful, and the turnaround, though required, was pretty incredible.
    The first party launch games generally look pretty meh (apart from Forza, which looks great).
    Their attitude to indies is lacking.

    But I’ve never seen you agree with one of these points. Objectively, you can’t deny the price is too high compared to PS4. If you say it’s fine, well my friend, you’re a fanboy.

    Not sure where you are getting support for full surround sound with the Xbox One. Turtle Beach is releasing a headset that has to have an adaptor for the Xbox One while using a 3.5 jack. I can’t find any article stating that Xbox One controller supports more than stereo out of the gate. If Turtle Beach is using its own driver what is to stop from doing the same for the PS4? Result you have nothing.

    In fact they just talk about chat coming through the controller not game sound.

    You’re getting desperate now…

    “…the pair of XO Ear Force cans will be available at the console’s launch and feature 3.5mm jacks, detachable boom mics and deliver surround sound through wired connections to controller adapters.”

    “Be immersed in Surround Sound…” “The XO SEVEN connects directly to the wireless Xbox One controller so you are free from wires to the console”

    It’s a stereo jack and you said “The headphone jack is only for voice chat.”

    #81 9 months ago
  82. G1GAHURTZ

    Yes, I did.

    The ‘jack on the DS4′ is only for voice chat. That doesn’t mean that ‘stereo’ is just for voice chat.

    I clearly used the definite article, meaning that I was referring to the DS4 jack specifically, and not all stereo jacks in general.

    Actually my bad – you are right. Stereo jack is a confusing name as the voice uses one of the bits so incoming sound is just mono. Not helped by confusing wording official docs from Sony.

    I’d say those links you provided aren’t concrete. MS don’t seem to be making a point of the feature and the others are possibly confused marketing speak. Be nice if it did but if they are making a big thing of better than phone voice quality is 7.1 surround through each and every connected controller realistic?

    Good point. You are right when you say it like that. Im not familiar with the Wii Mote but does it function like the ds4 will?
    Hearing game sounds while playing?

    “…the pair of XO Ear Force cans will be available at the console’s launch and feature 3.5mm jacks, detachable boom mics and deliver surround sound through wired connections to controller adapters.”

    Derp. The Xbone Controllers do not have 3.5mm ports by default microsoft has a proprietary port for sound that is why Xbox 360 headsets will not work for Xbox One without an adapter. Which the 7 series is using an adapter to use the 3.5mm jack, the same one that is standard across mobile, and other headset devices and PS4.

    @87:

    Well, there’s the Turtle beach info, and also info from the upcoming Polk headset, which backs it up quite nicely.

    http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/06/13/e3-2013-polk-audios-new-xbox-one-sound-bar-and-headphones

    “The 4 Shot will use a control module to connect directly to the Xbox One controller’s proprietary data port. The design is virtually the same as the 133t’s, but instead of having to plug in an additional processing unit to the console, audio will be transmitted directly from the Xbox One to the controller.”

    If it was only coming from a single MS source, I might agree with you, but with MS, Polk and Turtle Beach all saying the same thing, I think that this might just be a simple case of MSs clueless PR team concentrating on selling Skype, rather than a gaming feature, yet again.

    I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see, though…

    What do you mean?

    @92

    THat engadget article you link mention it has to be plugged into an adapter which will be plugged into the Xbox One controller. THe Xbox One doesn’t have an 3.5mm port like the PS4 it uses its own proprietary port/jack like the 360 does. THere is no need for 3.5mm for a Xbox One device.

    @93
    Those types are made for X1 thus those adapters will be included. It means you can also use it allround. Its nice actually.

  95. G1GAHURTZ

    @93:

    Yes, as #94 correctly says, the 3.5mm jack is so that the headphones can be used with other devices, like tablets/mp3 players/etc.

    It’s not for the X1 controller itself.

    @90
    It’s just odd it’s third parties talking about this and not MS. The only bit on a MS website is a description of a third party product.

    Where is the 7.1 processing done then? By the console? Or these dongle things attached to the controller. You’ve got X41s like me. There’s a little processing box to do the surround to funky headphone stuff.

    As you say MS PR not really excelling currently and it’ll all come out in the wash :)

  97. Phoenixblight

    Yeah so you take off the adapter off the 3.5mm plug it where ever you want. You can essentially do the same thing with other devices. Reason why MS went with a proprietary device is not so it can do something unique, no its to make money off selling the license like they have done so with this gen. They are just finding a way to monetize every aspect of the system.

    @97, A primary reason I switched from X360 to PS3. Originally had an arcade X360, needed a couple proprietary cables for my controllers, a 20GB HDD & a wifi adapter, all combined costing over double what I paid for the damn console (this was ’08, MS still charged about $100AUD for a crummy 20GB HDD). To say that was a joke is a fucking insult to the word.
