Giant Bomb’s Ryan Davis passes away

Monday, 8th July 2013 18:59 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Giant Bomb has confirmed that founder Ryan Davis died on July 3.

Davis, a well known American games journalist, was 34. Giant Bomb’s team is said to be “stunned” by the news.

“In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold,” said site staffer Matthew Rorie, referring to Davis’s recent wedding.

The cause of death has not been reported.

Davis and Jeff Gerstman launched Giant Bomb in 2008 after Gerstmann was fired from Gamespot over his review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. CBS, Gamespot’s owner, acquired the site in 2012.

Our thoughts are with Ryan’s friends and family.

Who knows. We all go at some point. I’ve known more people that have died than years I have been alive and I am 27.

:( :( I used to listen to the HotSpot podcast every week on the train to college. Those guys got me to re-adopt consoles this gen after a very long stretch as a PC-only gamer.

After the Gerstmann Incident when Davis moved to Giant Bomb with much of the Gamespot crew, I was shocked to see he wasn’t a scrawny little guy, which I always imagined from his voice.

Rest in peace, Ryan. You were a great though understated voice in games journalism.

While it’s sad and we do not know the cause of death, at least for now, we may be able to hope that based on how site staffers last saw him after his wedding, that at least he may have died happy.

Life can literally be the cruelest of things sometimes. That point is ever more evident today. 34 years old and had just gotten married too about a week or so ago.

    RIP, Ryan. :(

    A terribly sad day.

I’ve been with Giantbomb since the very beginning. Ryan Davis was the voice of that website, he directed his thoughts and opinions so well that without him the crew will not be the same, ever. It’s going to be a while before those guys will recover from this loss. May Giantbomb.com live on strong with Ryan in mind as they forge the coming years together.

    Nuts… Absolutely nuts.

Pretty distraught over here, over a guy that would send me to sleep every Wednesday night.

Okay, that sounds creepy, but I’m serious.

What? A man does not die of natural causes at that age, unless he was living with something very wrong. Aneurism? Bad heart? Was it natural? WTF, man. This is terrible news. I am shocked, and very sad. RIP, Ryan. Too soon, brother. Too soon.

I guess it was a heart thing or something, he did have a bit of weight on him. But man, what a fucking tragedy. I’ve been listening to him on the bombcast for what feels like years, and I feel like I’ve just lost a friend. Every Wednesday I’m genuinely looking forward to listening to it for a few hours.

Really nice guy, really good at his job, a great personality and one of the few people in existence who could control that cast of big personalities. RIP Ryan. -_-
