Suda 51 on Xbox brand: only a matter of time before it explodes in Japan

Wednesday, 19th June 2013 12:01 GMT By Dave Cook

Killer is Dead creator Suda 51 has shared his view on the Xbox brand and the way it is perceived in Japan. While the nation’s relationship with Microsoft’s console has hardly been warming in the past, the developer reckons it’s all about to blow up for the better.

Speaking with NowGamer, the Grasshopper Manufacture founder said, “I honestly don’t know what Microsoft’s plans or vision for Xbox One in Japan is going to be. We really haven’t received immense support for Xbox One in Japan as of yet, so I don’t know what their plans are.

“That being said, Windows and a lot other Microsoft products have a track record of being successful in Japan, so I think it’s matter of time or some kind of hook that will let the Xbox explode or shine in Japan. But what or when that is, is still kind of up in the air.”

It follows confirmation that Microsoft currently has no release plans for Xbox One in Japan, despite having listed support for the console in almost every Xbox 360 territory worldwide. It hits the rest of Asia in 2014.

Will Xbox One help the brand explode in Japan? Let us know what you think below.

Thanks OXM.

As long as Sony continue to do whatever it is they do in Japan, Microsoft’s cut of the pie will remain as it is.

Microsoft should just continue on throwing everything they have at North America and Europe.

    Dave are you seriously?

“despite having listed support for the console in almost every Xbox 360 territory worldwide” almost what????? not even half the territories.

No Portugal, no Iceland, no Poland and the others Central european countries and some of the south like Greece and Cyprus.

In South America only Brazil is getting the console.

No country in Africa and Asia is getting the console this year too.

I don’t know how you do your math to get the “almost every”.

I’m surprised they are even trying in Japan tbh though given that they are not launching Xb1 in Japan could be a telling sign that they no are no longer as committed as they once were.

Xb1 is even less suited to the Japanese audience as it comes bundled with Kinect and many homes in Japan lack the space to use it properly.

Eeeehh? Xbox shining here in Japan? take a walk outside Suda-San!! It’s Sony/Nintendo territory, There’s VERY little interest in the Xbox here, I don’t think you know as much about your own culture’s gaming interests as you think you do.

@4 yeah that’s pretty much it buddy (^-^)

“it’s matter of time or some kind of hook that will let the Xbox explode or shine in Japan”

Yeah… you could have said that during the lifecycle of the first Xbox (the one before the 360) but now? It’s a given that Xbox has not and will not succeed in Japan. And with the massive anti-consumer approach of Xbox One and all its limitations, things will absolutely not improve, neither in Japan, nor in the rest of the world.

That’s very well and good, Suda. Now, go back to making those weird little games filled with dick jokes and boobs that I like and leave the analysis to, well, anyone else. I assume next thing you know, he’ll be telling everyone to invest in 8-tracks.

why should the xbone be successful in japan when the sbox360 wasn’t? the 360 was cheaper, had one year in advance and plenty of exclusive japanese titles and even studios in japan. the xbone on he other hand as nothing except for crimson dragon, launches at the same time, is more expensive and oesn’t even care for the used games market which is even more important in japan.

I am not even convinced the system will sell all that well in the west. It has zero chance in JPN, imo.

@10 well it doesn’t help it’s obvious he’s probably wrong. All the evidence over 10 plus years says that while Windows might be popular in Japan Xbox brand won’t be. Not sure why he talks about lots of MS stuff either – most non business stuff – Zune etc – tanked in Japan pretty much.

I like his games but based on this wouldn’t value his opinion on Xbox chances in Japan very highly.

It’s kinda weird. The impression I got during the E3 and the following week is that MS has completely abandoned Japan or given up on it. It’s not even supported by the new XBLA, at least at the launch. Their main game focus were shooters and if I recall correctly it’s not quite the dominant genre in Japan.
