Xbox One: UK pre-orders ahead of PS4 at some retailers

Wednesday, 29th May 2013 12:42 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One’s UK pre-orders are now ahead of PS4 at many stores, according to retail sources cited in a new report.

MCV reports that one retail source suggested in the 24 hours following the Xbox One reveal, pre-orders on Microsoft’s console exceeded those of PS4 orders since it was revealed back in February. The source also said that PS4 orders spiked during the same period.

Take the above as rumour for now as no sources were named, and the report only cites one retailer, but it’s clear that interest in both machines is hotting up.

What do you make of the above?

  1. The_Red

I guess English consumers like to lose their basic consumer rights and being forced to check every 24 hours like a parolee.

    #1 2 years ago
  2. Djoenz

Wow which morons would preorder already. So much failness. I wont preorder either one. Definitely not before E3 lmao.

    #2 2 years ago
  3. stretch215

Not surprised at all, if true. This machine is going to sell really well. You passionate protesters need to realize you are a vocal minority, and that the average consumer doesn’t care about “always online”, or even drm. @1 has this been confirmed? Last I checked that was a rumor. Edit: @2+1. I won’t pre order either console until july/august most likely. I want to get as much info as possible.

Remember Assassins Creed 3 preorders being the highest amount compared to any other Assassins Creed prior?
Yep. We all know how that turned out.

Gamers so eager to preorder Xbox One has done so not for what they’ve seen but what they have experienced thus far with the brand.

Preordering really doesn’t mean anything but numbers. Not success.

  5. tenthousandgothsonacid

There’s a lot of mouth breathing fucking idiots in this country. And they all buy the xbox version of any game I’m queueing for.

    #5 2 years ago
  6. Rikki

I stand by my statement, people are idiots for pre-ordering this early.

    #6 2 years ago
  7. stretch215

@4 preorders mean nothing until they become sales numbers. Sales numbers are the definition of success. What this really means is that the xbox1 has not been recieved as negatively as some of you would like to believe.

    #7 2 years ago
  8. Tech-N9ne

Hehehe, oh boy. I hope some of you Sony fanbois don’t commit suicide. ;)

The sooner you guys stop hateing, wishing failure, stop caring about the about sales figures, who wins and all that crap. The sooner you guys can relax and enjoy gaming, no matter your platform of choice.

    #8 2 years ago
  9. ps3fanboy

someone is clearly pulling numbers outta their ass.. this is of course just some xbot desperately trying to save micro$haft’s with more lies.

    #9 2 years ago
  10. The_Red

I’m not saying Xbox One fans are idiots. Only people that pre-order it now and not just the Xbox. ANYONE who pre-orders a next-gen console with so much unknown stuff about it (Both PS4 and X1) is an idiot.

I mean, after the Aliens CM and SimCity disasters, one would hope that people will stop blindly pro-ordering 60 dollar games, let alone 400-500 dollar consoles.

    #10 2 years ago
  11. Beta

Well of course. The xbox name sells these days. Not to me mind but I’m under no illusion that this thing won’t sell.

    #11 2 years ago
  12. ps3fanboy

@10 of course they are idiots, they support this drm pest. that will ruin gaming for many.. there is no excuse for this than idiocy.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. Mike W

This is bullshit, you can’t even preorder the PS4 yet or the Xbox one.

    #13 2 years ago
  14. viralshag

@13, Yes you can. Game are taking £20 pre-orders already.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. stretch215

@8+1 @13 gamestop are also taking preorders.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. Mike W

You may be right, up here in the US you can’t preorder it anyway. The most you can do is be put on a waiting list. I stand corrected.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. Digital Bamboo

If they’re from London, then they should be quite used to being on camera, so that can’t be an issue.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Mike W

I think you’re wrong bro, I’m on the waiting list for GameStop for PS4, unless you’re talking about a GameStop in the UK (which I didn’t think they had)

    #18 2 years ago
  19. skonkfonk

And what about France? Oh yeah Game disappear… :’(

    #19 2 years ago
  20. KineticCalvaria

I know several people who have pre-ordered the Xbox One without any tech knowledge whatsoever purely for the fact they have 360′s, all they are thinking is, yay a new Xbox to play FIFA and CoD on.

Not everyone checks gaming news sites or takes an interest in the tech side and I guarantee that’s why pre-orders are so high.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. TheBlackHole

I won’t be making a call until after E3, but eventually I’m sure I’ll end up with both anyway.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. viralshag

@18, For info: we do have GameStop in the UK, it was part of Blockbuster (I think) but I’m not sure if they’re still going as both my local Blockbuster and GameStop closed.

@20, So for pretty much the same reason any of us would buy a console? To play the games we like and want to play? :)

    #22 2 years ago
  23. Mike W

I was just on GameStop web page and there’s no option to preorder either console yet. So I’m a little confuse where you got that information from.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. stretch215

    Another related article:

@18 I think you may be right. I could’ve sworn I saw it somewhere online though… edit: not that it really matters. It will almost definitely sell more in the US than in the UK.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. viralshag

@23, It might be local stores that offer it only, not a company wide thing. I assume they have loyalty cards and store your info? Might be like an unofficial deposit rather than an official pre-order.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. skonkfonk

oh sorry but just to let you know that in France you can also preorder (in MICROMANIA)

    #26 2 years ago
  27. OnionPowder

Pre-ordering doesn’t make you an idiot. If you’re going to get the console no matter what, which if you are an Xbox 360 user you probably will, then pre-ordering makes quite a bit of sense actually. Almost every console launch ever has consoles selling out within the first few weeks or months to the point of the consoles selling for twice the launch price. Even the Wii U was like that. This will guarantee you a console at launch so you don’t have to fight the crowds.

Also people bitching on the internet about privacy concerns and used game sales are the vocal minority. People want their next Call of Duty and they’re going to get the console that has the newest one with the exclusive DLC.

EDIT: Also we’re at least 5-6 months off from the launch of the consoles. You can easily just cancel the pre-order and get your money back if they announce anything that really is extremely bad.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. merrc

Pre-ordering without even knowing the MSRP, and not even being able to use the TV side, which is stupid anyways, is complete fanboy ism. It’s no that I don’t want success for Xbox, but all they’re doing is allowing Micro$oft to continue to bend us over… Thanks you bloody Brits!

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Mike W

Yea I went on GameStop right after MS’s conference and they had the same process as the PS4. Yea the article is repeat from yesterday.

Yea may be, but the major ones do not have the option yet to preorder, at least up in here in the US.

    #29 2 years ago
  30. KineticCalvaria

@22, not exactly, the features count too. Remote play with vita, media focus on xbox, new kinect features, used games DRM etc etc. They know nothing of that. So no :)

    #30 2 years ago
  31. viralshag

@28, #27 is correct though, a lot of people probably don’t care what other options are available if they already own a 360 and are happy to stick with them.

If Sony want to win the hearts and minds of all the gamers, that’s fine for them but gamers shouldn’t complain if MS are trying to broaden their audience and actually look like they might be successful in doing so.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. KineticCalvaria

@31, you argue against my point then say it yourself? Make your mind up viral!

    @28, Has a price.

There are people who are really into the whole voice recognition-motion control stuff. And they will pay for $400 remote that does that.

  34. polygem

preorders can always be cancelled. while you can preorder x1 via amazon germany, you cannot preorder ps4 yet…at least not here. funny that you can preorder the x1 at gamestop, you know, the devil, the satan of the used games that is responsible for crashing devs worldwide.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. viralshag

@32, I wasn’t arguing against your point, I just think it’s the same for most people. You said people are only pre-ordering to play the next CoD and FIFA. Games your friends want to play.

Why else would you pre-order or buy a console if it wasn’t to play the games you wanted? What you said in #30, that’s all pretty secondary stuff for a lot of people.

#28 said it’s pure fanboism, which is isn’t.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. dravenkaze

Id like a ps4 but why pre order no release date yet

    #36 2 years ago
  37. KineticCalvaria

@35, No my main point was because they are previous owners of the 360, the FIFA and CoD part was just meant to imply that they are casual gamers, hence my point was that casual gamers/360 owners with little knowledge of the One will make up a lot of preorder figures (from my personal experience).

If I hadn’t watched the conference and checked gaming sites I’d probably have pre-ordered too, but now I’m 99% sure I’m getting a PS4. But never mind! Lol.

    #37 2 years ago
  38. Djoenz

Why is every worried about there privacy? Smart TVs come with cameras on now and all laptops have them built in, mobile phones track your every movement and they have front and rear cameras. We live in a big brother world people and if they wanna watch me knock one out on my sofa all I can say is i’m having more fun than you unlucky! And yeah boy I got my pre order sorted!

    #39 2 years ago
  40. RandomTiger

I’ve preordered a PS4. No deposit required, I’ll cancel it if I dont like what I see at E3.

    #40 2 years ago
  41. VibraniumSpork

I waited until the after XB1 event to pre-order a PS4 (£20 @ Game), though I did feel like my mind was somewhat made up before that point. Granted, the most important elements of each console (launch titles, price etc.) are all still to come at E3, but in the absence of any true shocks – Microsoft curating a bunch of legit new IPs or Sony ruining their run of awesome exclusives – I reckon the PS4 will be the console for me.

Plus, I’d rather just put the £20 down now and not have to worry about getting to the party too late in the post E3-rush. Once that event hits the pre-orders will land in their thousands, and not all of those peeps will be guaranteed a console before Christmas. Just sayin’.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. OnionPowder

@38 Yeah and your car is going to break down at some point but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy a car. If somebody has the money and wants to buy a piece of new tech because it’s exciting and fun then let them spend their money as they please. I’ve seen people spend their money on worse.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. ps3fanboy

@37 and these casual idiots are the ones that are in for a rude awakening. when they cant play when not online, used game blocked, no bro house gaming… i cant wait for this xbone to break or they get banned for cheating in cod, so they lose their account. the backlash at micro$haft is gonna get hilarious, LOL!

    #43 2 years ago
  44. Djoenz

    @42 Couldn’t agree more!

    #45 2 years ago
  46. viralshag

@43, You’re acting like “casual games” aren’t the biggest seller on the PS3 like they are the 360… Who do you think buys Sony hardware? REAL GAMERZ? Haha, give me a break.

Sony leads in terms of sales for FIFA and CoD:BO2, so congrats I guess, Playstation owners are mostly casual European football fans and FPS fans.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. salarta

You know, I just realized the reason behind a news article like this one. The XBox One is much-maligned by gamers at the moment, with a LOT of backlash toward it on here especially. So, news articles that suggest that the XBox One is actually on top or in high demand are much more eye-catching, and lead to more hits.

I’m not trying to accuse VG247 of something nefarious, I’m just very aware of the kind of articles we’re seeing, and the titles given to those articles, compared to the kind of articles and titles to articles we’re not seeing. This article, for example, could have easily had the title “PS4: UK pre-orders ahead of XBox One at some retailers,” and I’m very sure that’s the title we would see if there was more hate for PS4.

Though of course, when it comes to @1′s statement, I’d like to remind that we’re talking about a territory that’s cool with having cameras just about everywhere short of inside their pants, and even that’s iffy. :P

    #47 2 years ago
  48. Samoan Spider

@47 Difference is, anyone I’ve spoken to about it doesn’t really care. The logic behind that being that if we wake up living in ’1984′ then that’s a problem, but this isn’t it. People are playing on the Daily Mail level of fuckery that conjures images of a group of shady types sat in a basement flicking through live images all over the world grunting and rubbing their legs in a less than seductive manner. However, that’s horseshit and any half sensible person knows it. The same types that genuinely believe in DIA being an underground installation and that ChemTrails are a thing. If there is a decent selection of games then not a single fuck will be given by me about privacy.

Edit: Fuck it, I might just pre-order to add to the perceived problem :)

    #48 2 years ago
  49. viralshag

@47, I think that’s absolutely not true to be honest because it wasn’t long ago after the PS4 announcement we had this headline:

“GameStop believes the PS4 will sell out like crazy at launch”

    #49 2 years ago
  50. salarta

@48: The picture you presented is an assumption of how a broad spectrum of people think about the matter. If the picture you presented was truly representative of every person with this concern, it would certainly deserve mockery. The fact of the matter is, it’s much more complicated than that.

What if someone hacks into your Kinect to spy on you without your knowing? It’s not like this hasn’t happened with webcams, particularly with perverts remotely turning on webcams to view and take pictures of women, in some cases blackmailing them on top of it. And unlike PCs, an XBox One is GUARANTEED to have a camera connected to it via Kinect, because Microsoft has explicitly said you can’t use the XBox One without a Kinect attached and running even if it’s in some kind of “safe mode” they created.

But what if they manage to get security of the camera itself down to a fine art where it’s absolutely impossible under any and all circumstances (a very far-fetched premise but we’ll run with it) to hack into the camera? Does that mean the Kinect is just fine? Nope! The Kinect clearly has to store certain information to function properly. At the very minimum, this is what your face looks like, but it could include things like your heartbeat as has been described already. Even if we assume Microsoft simply stores this in some database or hard drive to be accessed only by algorithms, and nobody at the actual company will ever see this data, what’s to stop hackers hacking their way in and stealing this data? If you thought the hackings of the Playstation Network and XBox Live of financial information were already bad, imagine how this extended information would further aid identity theft.

It’s not a bunch of shady suits in the bowels of Microsoft headquarters we need to be worried about spying on some random gamer eating Cheetos in the middle of Halo. It’s identity thieves and stalkers, most of which wouldn’t have anything to do with Microsoft.

The camera is an especially scary premise for parents, when you put real thought into what kinds of people are out there, what kind of things might happen in front of that camera, and what could happen with any pictures or data of their children through the Kinect.

@49: And that was when we only had information on the PS4, and the PS4 was the hot topic.

Salarta, that is the nature of the beast. Samething with WiiU once it stoped selling(after launch). People love to hate. And anything that can get a persons passion up enough to post is good.

If the headlines were all onesided to the point that it reflected an industry where one system was outselling the others 25 to 1, then the posts would be of less then 12 posters all saying “Yup”. In the end, less people would care enough or be moved enough to post at all. Sometimes you have to give people something to talk about. People come here and other sites like it, to talk about games. Nothing wrong with throwing out a few bones.

The problem I have is when sites will run with anything. Not pointing fingers. And I fully understand that if something comes down the wire, it HAS to be reported, otherwise it is neglectful. But there needs to be a balance between what some guy in his moms basemnet makes up and calling it “source” and something worthy of reporting. But in many cases truth and something worthy to write about are not always the samething. Rumour is reportable, hence the problem.

It is a bit of a no win situation for the site trying to keep its readers upto date. Boils down to readers needing to understand that facts and “reports” aren’t always the samething. And then not getting worked up over them. And also to understand that EVERYTHING can be spun one way or another. Like the BlockBuster report where Xone was setting presale records at BB. Last I knew BB wasn’t exactly king of console sales. Thus having little or validity at all. Same with this story.

Tell me that Gamestop is showing Xone preorders 3-1 over PS4 leading upto launch and I will take more notice. That being said this story is worthy of running. You just can’t take it as written in stone…as Dave correctly points out. Take from it what ye will.

    @50, You said:

“This article, for example, could have easily had the title “PS4: UK pre-orders ahead of XBox One at some retailers,” and I’m very sure that’s the title we would see if there was more hate for PS4.”

But the reaction to the PS4 was quite positive and yet we still had a similar title. This is simply the hype-train, you would get these titles regardless.

  54. nikk900

Why are people saying it’s retarded to pre-order something? You don’t have to buy it. With stock shortages it’s best to pre-order and avoid missing out.

Most people don’t use sites like this and have no idea what the Xbox One actually does. All they know is it’s the new version of the 360 they have now.

    #54 2 years ago
  55. OlderGamer

Also no doubt that a % of the preorders will end up on Ebay. I never question launch window sales. But I wonder what happens 4 to 6 months post launch.

    #55 2 years ago
  56. SplatteredHouse

@54: “Why are people saying it’s retarded to pre-order something?”

There’s no point to further appeal to, or offer further incentive to, those who’ve already said they’re happy with what you’ve offered them, so far.

You’re also contributing towards incentivising and empowering publishers to act against the interest of yourself, and the media, in so far as there will be increased future pressure/focus on ensuring high pre-orders, and an informed media/their readers can potentially become cancelled pre-orders, if a time comes before the release date that they realize that what you were offering isn’t as great as you might be trying to convince people it is. Enter, “embargo”, wonder-hound to save the day for publishers while leaving consumers at a critical disadvantage!

    #56 2 years ago
  57. viralshag

@55, Yeah I mean that list of “next gen” games on the PC is endless right? I mean, think of all those games that are superior in both graphics and gameplay that you can’t get anywhere else! Absolutely endless!

    #57 2 years ago
  58. SplatteredHouse

@54: Why it can be considered not that smart to pre-order, part 2: What are you actually getting, what are you gaining by doing so, that you wouldn’t obtain by buying once the game’s out? Which of the pros and cons is more important, that’s for you to decide.

    #58 2 years ago
  59. viralshag

@59, It’s just as easy to ask what you are losing by pre-ordering? All you’re doing, at most, is putting a deposit down on something you want to buy before others.

As others have said, you can still cancel and change your mind. If you want to get your hands on one of the consoles at launch, it certainly doesn’t hurt to try and get some security on that with a pre-order.

Do some research before you purchase. Pre order well ok so be it, but at least do some research. You cant expect it to be the same.

You cant tell me that people that already pre ordered the next gen consoles and dont even know whats up!

That would even be more retarded. Dont make me laugh seriously.
Not only consumers basically bitched about the Xbox reveal, but also developers.

    Wait after E3 at least…

Again people in the industry have concerns as well not only us the nerds that frequently visit game sites.

    PS3 YLOD
    Xbox RROD

I havent had any issues why? because I waited for the Slim. NERDS THAT HAVE TO BUY THE NEXT GEN RIGHT AWAY HAHA.

I have the right to bitch about it so I will :) You have the right to pre order, but it still makes you a retard in my eyes.

Its just my opinion and thus I am not right by default.

I suppose ppl are right when they say they have seen ppl pay for worse.

Isnt it retarded though seriously if you want to buy a product when you dont know shit about it? :P

  62. Samoan Spider

@62 What phone do you have? What TV do you have? What car do you have? I can’t imagine you waited 5 years to get what you wanted in any of those cases. Most people don’t share your logic I’m afraid. For me, I buy a product that has a warranty so if it breaks, I’ll give the thing back and take a new one. Great thing is, all this cloudy nonsense means no loss of saves. DLC and games are tied to your account so no loss there either. What’s the harm in pre-ordering?

  63. Joe Musashi

What a fabulously vacuous article. “Retail sources” ” One retail source suggests” “exceeding”

Lots of implication. Zero genuine substance. No figures. No metrics. Just here-say from unnamed sources.

This is not a leak of secret information. There is no NDA. Why the need for anonymity?

I’ve had farts with more substance than this.

That car analogy made me laugh tbh. Well let me put this way. BRANDS my man. With consoles there only two brands. Sorry I mean three brands.

You get hassle with one brand you switch. Consoles you basically stuck cause that would explain the many many ppl tht had 2 or more xboxes in their life time.

I dont think you can compare that shit in any way.

@60: A few posts above yours (post #57), I put forward points against pre-ordering, already. I couldn’t think of a lot of positives inherent to the practice (and I certainly didn’t want to speak to what anyone else reading would appreciate or not, from pre-ordering) so, I left the second part of my response to nik900′s question more open-ended. But, I definitely did first offer potential negative consequences of pre-ordering, as per nik’s query.

  74. salarta

@53: Yes, but once again, the article you point out was at the time the only one of the two companies that had any solid, official information on next-gen specs. It was operating in a vacuum, meaning that as you pointed out, PS4 getting such articles was part of the hype-train. But now that both consoles’ offerings have been announced, you can plainly see the dynamic I mentioned taking place. Just look at @73 for example. What makes “oh, a few retailers said they have more XBox One preorders than PS4 preorders” more newsworthy than “Amazon UK has more PS4 preorders than XBox One preorders?” Simple, XBox One is more controversial, ergo news articles about the XBox One and even titling articles to seemingly be in favor of the XBox One happens under the plan of generating more hits.

    #74 2 years ago
  75. fearmonkey

People are pre-ordering because they either dont know about the bad stuff, dont care about the bad stuff, or know about it and are pre-ordering just in case MS changes its ways and they can get the console early.

I had to wait for a month after my pre-order when the 360 launched because they had so few of them, I dont blame them for pre-ordering. MS can still redeem themselves but im not counting on it.

okeydokey now they´re both available here for 599 euro (sure, must not be the real price but i doubt it will go up…but probably down)

just preordered the ps4, was tempted to preorder the one as well but no, i wont support that attitude. let´s see what sony comes up with at e3 and what ms will do damage controlwise.

you can always cancel your preorder…

EDIT: @70:you preorder but you will always get it for the final, cheapest price…it´s always like that. really no risk to preorder stuff at all.
