“Stay away from DRM” – campaign targets Sony

Monday, 27 May 2013 20:37 GMT By Debabrata Nath

Fearing Sony might implement similar policies concerning used games sales and DRM to those Microsoft is rumored to be using for the Xbox One, fans have kicked off a Twitter campaign to reach out to key PlayStation employees, urging them to steer clear of such policies for the PlayStation 4.

The campaign which took off via a forum post over at NeoGaf has been started to ensure Sony gets to know gamers’ opinions regarding restrictive DRM and used game policies and how they don’t want such restrictions to be placed upon them when it comes to gaming on Sony’s next-gen console: the PlayStation 4.

The campaign which uses the hashtags #PS4NoDRM and #PS4USEDGAMES encourages gamers to post tweets using the tags. It also asks them to send tweets  to some prominent PlayStation employees who might have a say in the decision making policies of the company. It includes:

  • Shuhei Yoshida (president of worldwide studios)
  • John Koller (head of hardware marketing)
  • Guy Longworth (senior vice president PlayStation Brand Marketing)
  • Scott Rohde (PlayStation Software Product Development Head for Sony Worldwide Studios America)

The campaign is gaining momentum on several websites and forum boards including popular social media website Reddit.

It’s also interesting to note that Sony is said to be closely monitoring the campaign, with several PlayStation employees responding to the campaign on Twitter. However, none of them has given any indication on what the company’s official approach regarding used games sale and DRM might be.

Whatever be the outcome of this campaign, it’s interesting to see fans making an effort to let the company know how they feel about certain policies such as always-online DRM and restrictions on used games sale. We’ll let you know if Sony issues an official statement regarding this.

Looks like Sony’s doing everything right so far. I have a feeling that even if they did have some DRM policy they planned to implement (I think if they did then at this point they’re scrapping it), they would at the very least try to explain why they’re doing it and treat their consumers respectfully.

    Why cant they do a

1 Don’t install. Slower load times trade your games. Read from the disc

    Or

2 Install requiring internet check and linking. Digital rights are yours..you’re stuck with the game.

@2: Why do the choices have to be bad and worse? Why not good? Allow installing, and require the disc be present for verification. And tie digital content to your console and your account, allowing for offline play on your system, and online play on any system. That’s what the 360 does now, and it gives you the best of both worlds–quicker and quieter operation plus reasonable piracy prevention. Now that MS is going off into full blown anti-consumer mode, Sony can slide into the right spot.

@9 “And tie digital content to your console and your account”

Good idea right? Now, what if we expand on this a little more and say that all content is digital. Now what?

This is where the people who made this petition and people hating on the Xbox fail. They are not future proofing their thoughts. The vast majority of media content (not counting things like concerts, theater) is going to be purely digital soon. Things like DVDs and CDs will only exist for the small majority of back of the blade consumers. So in a world where everything is digital, where the disc is simply a carrying container for bits and not the content itself, what should be our plan to make sure people aren’t stealing things left, right and side-ways?

Think of that future world, think of a plan and I bet that it is almost exactly what the Xbox is doing. And Sony, if they don’t also do it out of the box, will have to patch and follow suit. Otherwise they will be the dinosaur when the meteor hits.

    I buy every game new.
Day one if I really want it a lot, otherwise I buy it when the price lowers to a reasonable price.
Amazon, zavvi, shopto have often GREAT deals if you’re willing to wait some days.
It’s my way to respect the devs, though…I 100% support this campaign.
I don’t want to be forced to be online (what if I bring my console to a place where I have no internet on vacation?, or just…like it’s happening in the last 2 months, what if I don’t want to sign in on PSN?)
I’m convinced that devs and publishers must get their FAIR cut from a used game, but DRM is not the way.

@11 Kaz HIrai is a fake account, though insanely fun :)

All this talk about how ”passionate” their fans are, when they could just come out and say that they’re not planning on implementing anything of the sort. It would gain them massive support from gamers everywhere.

“A twitter campaign”. Now there’s an oxymoron.

A campaign doesn’t equal a result – don’t be dense enough to assume just because a few people all claim to want the same thing then that means it has to happen. And this is barely a campaign. Pressing ‘retweet’ and bashing out 140 characters of self-interest is typical gamer-community minimum effort stuff. Clicking your mouse is not affirmative action.

And ‘gamers’ are not a console manufacturer’s only clients. They have to consider the rights and needs of their other clients – such as their content providers and retail partners – without whom gamers would have nothing to play.

Sony are in a no-win situation. If they implement a similar DRM plan then gamers will bleat about being lied to or play some sort of bait-and-switch sob-story. If there is no used-game DRM policy gamers will credit themselves with having made it happen (even if there was no plan to instate a used-game DRM policy anyway) and more apathetic mouse-clicking will occur in the belief that it has some meaningful impact on the world.

Then, of course, there’ll be the self indulgent gamers who think no used-game DRM equates to no DRM whatsoever and will be up in arms when this is not the case, crying foul in the night.

The response tweets are great lip-service perceived as something far more substantial than they are.

    This is a farce.

And also if sony doesn’t implement this DRM a lot of devs will run to xbox one and microsoft’s vision will be a reality.Kinect, multitasking, skype and now plenty of exclusives, its about time the second hand market dies in order for gaming to survive and to grow but games now have to be cheaper…Think about it no more “THQ sold at auction it was in trouble” more newcomer developers can have reasured secured earnings, all they got to do be creative and last but not least FPS will be at normal quantitylike other games not over the top

Funny, PC gamers have been doing this for years and have gotten used to it (see steam). And yeah we get steam sales but honestly console games drop in price just as fast (sometimes faster). They do in large part remain somewhat more expensive than their pc counterparts, but there’s always going to be (and just about always has been) a ~$10 premium on console games that goes to Sony/MS regardless of distribution method.

I honestly love the portability that steam offers along with not ever having change discs when I decide to play a new game. Granted the steam offline mode can be a hassle but in the few times (5 maybe) I tried to use it there was always something else to do anyway (variety is the spice of life gentleman–the world doesn’t end if you can’t log onto your console for 48 hrs).

I think sony will ot implement it out in the open, they will say, at least thats what they are hinting, that this will be take care of the developer, if the developer wants something like this it will be done, at least with the DRM side of thigs, i hope is not the case, but lets be honest developers will pressure sony till this is an option on their consoles, and we know they can put a lot of pressure, so lets wait and see, pretty much like with the microsoft side of things too.

Publishers will determine if the PS4 gets the same DRM treatment like the X1, not Sony.

Gamers on here need a reality check if they think that the PS4 will not have DRM like the X1.

If successful, you can bet your ass Nintendo will use similar DRM measures for their next system after the Wii U.

No, not like what everyone thinks the XBone will be like. Make the verifiction occur at the distributer of the used game if you don’t want to do it online. And give people a way to verify their purchase 1 time, over the phone so they can still use an unconnected console.

    “developers will pressure sony”

I reckon that should be be “publishers will pressure sony”. Game development studios/workers generally don’t like the current 2nd hand games system but its publishers that will be applying the pressure and it will be publishers that receive the funds in addition to MS.

I doubt they will spending that money on risky new IP or giving developers more money or time to make products. In fact I think they will continue their worrying trend of investing more money than ever in fewer titles and being disappointed when they only sell 4 million copies or so.

Retailers have been pushing their luck with the second hand system, in which they favour you buying traded instead of new, this has been inviting a crackdown at a time when digital looks to be taking over. I assume they are doing this because they are desperate. Without access to this easy money we might see a lot more of them shutting down (again).

Meanwhile the consoles while operating in the most competitive environment ever and are risking aliening customers and MS is building a centralized authorization system that is practically begging script kiddies to launch denial of service attacks.

Looks like a big sad mess to me, I hope Sony choose to release a platform that doesn’t risk punishing users if they fall between the cracks of some kind of rights system. This is exactly the kind of crap that pushed me away from the PC years ago.

QFT and it’s a straight-up ridiculous policy, which I’m not going to be enabling. It runs in direct opposition of any smart thing to do, particularly if you’re in a situation so bad that you have to have a hand in the cookie jar…”Carry on like before” – wth – are you kidding me?

@27 Speaking of paying attention… Do you really think the opinions of somewhere up to 20k of the internet “gaming elite” is really going to sway MS or Sony when they are looking at a customer base of +70M?

Here is my prediction: When the rubber hits the road, people will discover the DRM is no different than what Steam does (except you can trade your license)and all this paranoid fervor will die down.

  37. Exicuren

@2 & 3, I came up with a system that Sony could implement:

    - you have all the usual stuff that PSN has regarding games and digital content (which is tied to an account and every single user on the system can use it as long as the account is not deleted)

-Whe you buy a game, the PS4 detects it and suggests to register your game (only once per new game detected), if you do it you can install the full game in the system and you can download it whenever you feel like it; if you don’t register it, the system tags it as used or rented and it only installs a part of the game.

-If you want to have a full install, you have to pay a fee (between 5 to 15 -maybe 10- dollars, depending on how much time has passed since the launch of the ga,e) to have the full install and be able to download it whenever you feel like it, and to avoid “piracy”, you can limit the number of consoles the game could be fully installed, up to two or three.

By doing this, used and rented games don’t get blocked and Sony (and the publishers) could get some profit from it.

    #37 2 years ago
  38. Richenbaum

somehow I don’t think charging a fee just to install a game to the hard drive and download it, when you already have it on a disc, is going to improve…anything…

    #38 2 years ago
  39. Exicuren

@38 what i meant with the full installation and the download was that if you register the game you get your physical copy and the digital copy, so in case the disc gets scratch or lost, you can have it always with you, because it’s registered to your account. Besides that, i can’t think of any other way.

    Sony is RESPONSIBLE for DRM:

According to NeoGAF member gofreak, the patent application was filed on 9 December 2012 by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, and will work by linking individual game discs to a user’s account without requiring a network connection meaning any future attempt to use this disc on another user’s console won’t work.

The use permission tag stores the terms of use of the game and determines whether a combination of the disc ID and the player ID conveyed from the reproduction device fulfils the terms of use or not.

The patent explains that games will come with contactless tags that will be read by your console in much the same way as modern bank cards. When a disc is first used, the disc ID and player ID will be stored on the tag. Every time the disc is used in future, the tag will check if the two ID’s match up and, if not, then the disc won’t work.

The document goes on to explain that such a device is part of Sony’s ongoing efforts to deter second-hand games sales, and is a far simpler solution than always-on DRM or passwords.

It’s worth noting that Sony has not confirmed the existence of the device, and the patent doesn’t state what machine it will be used in, with later paragraphs also mentioning accessories and peripherals.

It does raise some concerns though. Firstly, the impact on game rental stores would be catastrophic as surely this means they’d no longer be able to do business? Given publishers’ usual desire to keep retailers sweet by not undercutting them on prices and the like, this would be an unusual move.

There’s also the issue of what happens should your console break and need replacing, or if you have more than one console. Will the games be linked to your PSN account, meaning they can still be used, or the console, meaning an entire new library of titles would need to be purchased?

IGN reached out to Sony for comment but was told the company doesn’t comment on rumour and speculation.

rental places would have to switch to digital rentals.

I would think everything will be all linked to your account like on current systems. you’d just have to do an authorized hard drive transfer or re-download. there’s no way anyone is going to make it all single hardware unit specific. that would be completely insane.

    @44

Or Rentals will be going under and MS and SOny will control rentals like with time trials or On Demand like AMazon.

  46. Richenbaum

yes, digital rentals. I know it’s not really a “rental” anymore, but that’s what some places already call it. I think they call them that on 360 already actually. never actually bought/”rented” a movie on there so I’m not sure.

@#54: Yeah, it’s OUTRAGEOUS how they expect us to actually *pay* for their products and services, am I right brothers? I mean, pirating everything from Torrent sites is TOTALLY the solution ‘cos the devs of my favorite games will then be FORCED to…

    …go out of business, dumbass.

That said, I just think that games, movies, TV shows and all other forms of entertainment media should be treated equally. It makes no sense for videogames to have a wildly and totally different of consumer practices to movies, for example.
