The Last of Us is playable during download

Friday, 17th May 2013 05:36 GMT By Brenna Hillier

You remember how Sony said it wanted to make PlayStation 4 games playable as you download them, so there’s less waiting around? That’s a thing PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us can already do.

Naughty Dog told GameInformer that the digital release of The Last of Us available on the PlayStation Store will be playable before its finished downloading.

You’ll have to wait till the download is half way done, but it’s still a significant bit of techno-wizardry.

The digital release will hit the PlayStation Store day and date with the retail release in North America, on June 14; that’s not a PlayStation Network update day, so it’s possible this applies to the rest of the world, too.

Pre-orders for the PlayStation Store version have not yet opened.

Wow.. How is it possible? The PS4 has an ARM chip to do this, they cant even allocate an SPU to do this. All six SPUs will be playing the game. One for sec, the other redundent.
It must be the unpacking of data method their using.. but even thats impossible as its hardware locked to unpack in a terrible way (slow installs).
Maybe the new firmware made changes.
    Wow, super impressed ND.

Naughty Dog are Naughty Dog for a good reason.
This is why I have no patience for game debs with excuses for why they can’t do this or that on a system such as PS3
Naughty Dog makes great games and at a timely duaration.

What more could you want from them.

says right there you need to download half the game first before you can start playing. so basically you’re just playing “disc 1″ while “disc 2″ is downloading. what’s so impossible about that?

Freaking ND. I was expecting a 360 game to do this but with PS3 and that CPU? Well done. Magic indeed.

Maybe the game installer is literally half the size of the game and then the game itself downloads the other half while you play.

Lol yeah guys, a little bit of both techno wizardary and magic.lol. I just dont see how its possible even with the split XDR and DDR ram. unless, its within the OS footprint, so Im guessing you may not be able to access the XMB, except to quit.
Well, whatever they’ve done, bravo ND, bravo to your magic and tech wizardry.

The question is how many GBs is it? Should i think 50GB? as Uncharted 3 was 40GB. Doesn’t matter i will stick with physical.

@all naughty dog discovered a way to stack the memory of the ps3 in a different format. Like Killzone for the ps4, naughty dog created their own memory profiler for the cell chip and the spu’s and changed how data is being loaded into the buffers. they did not follow the conventional method most programmers are using for ps3. They actually tried some new techniques for Ps4 on Ps3 which is why they can do this. you have to let the game load to at least 52% in order to play however the drawback is the load times for the game will be hella long until the game completely download because you have the cell, RSX, and all SPUs working but not in tandem….

The download bar runs at half speed compared to the ACTUAL download percentage on screen…

For example; on screen it says 10%, in reality it’s downloaded 20%…

That means when it says 50% on screen it’s actually downloaded 100% and you can play, thus giving the illusion of playing a game as its still downloading…
