Friday, 17 May 2013 13:55 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Nintendo Direct sessions for North America and Europe contained quite a bit of interesting information on the firm’s upcoming Wii U and 3DS titles for summer. During the event, the biggest take away was when Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the next three Sonic titles to be released from SEGA will be exclusive to Nintendo systems.

Session Highlights

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games announced.

Sonic: Lost World will be exclusive to Wii U, 3DS.

An alliance with SEGA

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Wii U is in the works, and new events such as figure skating pairs have been added. Stages take place in both Sonic and Mario themed worlds, and different events such as curling, skiing, and snowboard slopestyle might use the Wii Remote Plus controller, Wii U GamePad controller or both. Launch details and timing will be announced at a later date.

Nintendo also announced a partnership with SEGA which will bring Sonic: Lost World to Wii U and 3DS exclusively. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said during the North American Nintendo Direct session that more will be announced closer to E3.

The first screenshot for the game is posted over on the SEGA Blog.

The SEGA partnership will also include a bevy of Game Gear titles coming to Nintendo’s Virtual Console for 3DS such as: Columns, Crystal Warriors, Defenders of Oasis, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, G-LOC: Air Battles, Shining Force 2: The Sword of Hajya, Sonic Blast, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tails Adventure, and Vampire: Master of Darkness.

Another, unannounced Sonic title exclusive to Nintendo systems is also in the works.

Nintendo Direct UK

NoA’s JC Rodrico reiterated during the session that The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons lands in the NA eShop on May 30, and for the first three weeks of availability, each will be on sale for $4.99 instead of the normal $5.99.

JC also said that leading up to the launch of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, new videos from Nintendo Treehouse will be released showing various aspects of the game. A new Animal Crossing puzzle is available through StreetPass Mii Plaza today as well.

Game & Wario will release in US on June 23 and in Europe on June 28 through eShop and stores for $39.99. It includes a number of games that use the GamePad in different ways.

Newly revealed games include: Island, which lets two to five people launch little creatures called Fronks onto islands in the sea to score points; Patchwork, a puzzle game that tests players’ pattern-recognition skills; and Kung-Fu, which challenges players to help Young Cricket navigate a course safely using the forward-looking view on the TV and the top-down view on the GamePad.

A new Iwata Asks feature offers more details about the game here.

The Wonderful 101 will release in Europe on August 23 and in the US on September 15. Additional details will be announced after E3.

The biggest new out of both sessions, was that New Super Luigi U will be released as a standalone title, and as DLC for New Super Mario Bros. Wii U in July and August.

Nintendo Direct US

It will contain a new playable character in the form of Nabbit, who is only playable in multiplayer. New Super Luigi U hits retail as a standalone on August 25 in the US and on July 26 for Europe.

If you buy it as DLC, it will release in in both regions on June 20. As DLC it will run you $19.99 and $29.99 as a retail version.

Pikmin 3 gameplay was explained a bit more, such as how it can be played on the GamePad alone, how it the screen on it can also be used as a map showing areas previously explored and to pinpoint where characters are located in the world.

Three new main characters in the form of Alph, Brittany and Charlie have been added, and the game will not contain limitations during times of day.Various play controls will be available with Pikmin 3 as well such as the controller, nunchuck, GamePad, and more on multiplayer will be announced at a later date along with challenge modes.

Pikmin 3 will release in the US on August 4 and July 26 in Europe on Wii U.

Resident Evil: Revelations hits eShop on May 21 with GamePad controls and new content. Players can use the GamePad to view the map and change items using the touch screen without pausing their progress, or they can play the full game on the GamePad in off-TV mode, or play with the Wii U Pro Controller. The game is Miiverse-compatible, and a demo version is currently available on eShop.

Another Nintendo Direct focused on future Wii U content will air around the time of E3 2013, and will contain information on the new Smash Bros., 3D Mario game, Mario Kart and other Wii U titles.

If you are attending E3, Nintendo has partnered with Best Buy in the US to allow customers to play unreleased Wii U games during the event before they hit shelves.

    New Nintendo handheld:

    3DS2.

Same size as XL but as powerful as PS Vita and has better screens. B/C with all currant 3DS games and can be used alongside the Wii U.

    Not! :)

It’ll be Pikmin 3, euro release date.
    P100 release date.
    Super Luigi’s Bros, release date

Hopefully one suprise. I like it when they show something cool, then say:

“It’s available right now in E Store!”

It makes me squirt some white wee wee

they will announce what we finally need … Another remake of an old game for the wii-u and the 3ds!
Cause lets be honnest… Nintendo are a bunch of lazy fuck and the less they do the better they feel.

But wasn’t Pikmin 3 already confirmed for a August release? Or was that US only?

  6. The_Red

Summer Wii U games… I really hope they don’t release Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 too close to each other. Most people are predicting a Q3 release for both but to me, Pikmin’s popularity could really hurt W101′s chances, specially due to their similarities.

Also wondering if this ND will feature any 3rd party footage or will it be all Nintendo made games. A little bit of PES or some AC4 / Watch Dogs could do wonders after EA’s recent move.

So they are keeping Pikmin 3 date for E3… Was expecting more but Sonic exclusive is nice fore them. The Wii Sonic games haven’t been great (Black Knight or Secret of Rings) but this can still go the Colors route.

Still, Ninty should do a WHOLE LOT more than this to save Wii U.

Had more fun picking my nose, the Game & Wario looks abysmal

Hopefully the e3 direct is better

  13. monkeygourmet

    Meh…

Called it. Just ‘filler’, still… They better have some good shit for E3, and I don’t mean GC games on virtual console.

Pikmin 3 will be a stone cold classic though, Luigi DLC will be nice, Game n Wario for a bit of party silliness.

Not bad, we just need games, games, games!

I’m hoping Nintendo realised 3rd parties were pulling out (they would have known before us…), and had to save all the internal stuff for E3. Well, as has been said before: it’s going to be one hell of a show!

    #13 2 years ago
  14. The_Red

    @16
For their sake, that better be the case (Saving all internal / big stuff for E3). This vid had some nice stuff from Sega (Game Gear, Sonic LW while Japan is getting Yakuza 1-2 HD) but that’s it. If they only rely on this stuff plus one Mario and one Zelda, it will end up badly.

Of course, Retro and Monolith can always save the day with proper showings.

How do you know the Sonic game is going to be shitty? Sonic Colors, the last exclusive Sonic game to the Wii was pretty good. Sonic Generations and Sonic 4 are good games as well.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. monkeygourmet

    @14

    They kind of have too…

If not then I don’t know what the best they expected to happen?

E3 needs to create big waves for Nintendo… More than both Sony or MS…

Nintendo needs some massive showing of great games:

    Bayonetta 2
    Mario 3D
    Mario Kart
Metroid and or Star Fox reboot
    Monolith’s X
    Smash Brothers
    Fire Emblem X over
    F Zero U
    Pilot Wings U
    Zelda U teaser
Zelda Windwaker HD plus other HD GC games, Chibi Robo HD anyone?
Zombie U2 (Bono as a playable character)
Sonic vs. Mario programmed by Nintendo without shitty Sonic gameplay
    Nintendoland 2
    Capcom exclusive
    Advance Wars U
    Sin and Punishment 3
    Yoshi Yarn
    Kirby U

AND some new surprises, AND a bit of third party stuff, AND GBA / GC games on VC…

It literally needs to be THAT good…

They can’t afford any fuck ups. If they can unveil something like my list above… People will shit in their shoes…

A console that is half the price of the competition with 3 times as many great games?! Kaaaaboooom! :D

Also, I want them to rub third party money grabbing arse hats nose in the sand.

Nintendo aren’t saints, but they do there own thing. That’s hard as fuck in this climate.

    Calling no one master…

Bayonetta 2… That game alone means more to me than most PS4 / 720 stuff combined but that’s just because I loved the original to death. I’m already sold but me and other Bayo fans are not and should not be their target. There are not that many of them to help Wii U in any meaningful way.

They really need to be THAT good. Sonic Vs Mario from Nintendo plus Sin and Punishment 3 would really be awesome surprises. The 3rd party games plus stuff like Capcom or any other exclusive that you mentioned are a must too.

At this point, any company that wants to could probably buy exclusivity for the next three Sega games for a case of beer. This is hardly what Nintendo needs to dig themselves out of their hole.

Valkyria Chronicles 4, Yakuza, all the old Dreamcast/Saturn franchises…now, THOSE would make me take notice and consider the system. But a Sonic game? Come on. It’s not 1992 anymore.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. monkeygourmet

    @22

Ultimately, I feel we are looking at a pretty ‘niche’ console either way…

Thankfully, my favourite consoles aren’t always the most popular. If I want power I’ll go PC next gen, which I’m seriously thinking of.

People bitch about the Wii U but it has already shown a good few exclusives considering its only 6 months old.

    Zombie U
    New Super Mario U
    Nintendo Land
Lego City (which I’m playing as I type this!)
    Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
    Plus the E Shop games…

Then stuff that’s defiantly coming out soon(ish):

    Windwaker Hd
    Mario 3DU
    Mario Kart U
    Bayonetta 2
    Smash Bros U
    Fire Emblem X over
    Monolith X
    Yoshi Yarn
    Pikmin 3
    P 100

    ….

We’re talking at least 6 exclusives this year, maybe 10 plus if they get their releases sorted… That’s almost one big game a month…

I’m not to sure, but most people only get one game a month if that. I’m a big gaming fan and try to pick up a lot of stuff, but even I’m overwhelmed by all the games at the moment… It’s easy for stuff to be buried.

I tend to use PS Plus to pick p free Vita / PS3 games and get exclusives on Wii U and Multiplatform titles on 360.

The Wii U EASILY is worth the price of entry after these games start getting released, and there will only be more to come. A year into the PS4 life cycle and the Wii U will be the perfect second console, again, same as what happened with the Wii.

Nintendo win again by not competing directly with competition and let Sony and MS decide who has the biggest penis.

Say what you want, but a colorful, whimsical, not-exclusive-to-Nintendo, bona fide AAA-title was exactly what I need right now.
Obviously that dream has just been quashed with the announcement of Lost World as a Wii-U exclusive.
I definitely didn’t see that one coming.

wario, zelda and dk again… and people say cod get milked. this is really a lackluster from ninty. sega will of course regret that sonic exlusive when ps4 and x720 arrive.

    #38 2 years ago
  39. The_Red

    @38
EVERYTHING is milked to death. We have 6 FREAKING main Assassin’s Creed games, 3 Uncharteds, 4 Gears of Wars and a billion Ratchet & Clank games in a SINGLE gen. So yes, Mario and Zelda are milked to death but so is everything else. From COD to Gears.

If anything, the Nintendo’s fault is within LACK of new characters and worlds. Mario, Zelda and others were created more than 25 years ago. Pikmin is their only true, in-house new series (Sorry but Wii Sports doesn’t count as a real IP just as Kinect Sports and such don’t count. They are pointless mini-game collections).

    Here is the ‘WII-UTANIC’ song…

    It’s sinking It’s sinking It’s a sinking ship
I will watch as it all goes down
It will sink It will sink as It weight a ton

I waited for this and now that it’s happening
I only have tears of joy, there’s no point in saving
It seems like it where destines to drowning
The same way that sega did when ea left

    It’s sinking It’s sinking It’s a sinking ship
I will watch as it all goes down
It will sink It will sink as It weight a ton

Sinking ship, how long can you hold?
Your own illness is all that you are
    Sending signals through the drums
Slowly drowning in the warm waters of the sun

    It’s sinking It’s sinking It’s a sinking ship
I will watch as it all goes down
It will sink It will sink as It weight a ton

A ship like this will never last Time will pass
Lets raise a glass to drink and the band plays on
One less fat baby with a mustache to feed lets rejoice
