Call of Duty: Ghosts uses new engine, reveal this week – rumour

Pull up a stump, old chum, and let’s chew over the latest batch of entirely believable Call of Duty rumours, which could be confirmed, denied, or forgotten about in just a few more days.

The first and most credible cab off the rank comes via IGN, which claims to have received a photo of GameStop’s promotional display plans for the next Call of Duty game.

The plan simply describes the game as “Call of Duty title” for multiple platforms, and expects posters to arrive in-store and go on display on May 1.

As it’s quite unlikely Activision would allow retail promotional material to proceed the shooter’s reveal, we may be in for an information drop mid-week; as IGN notes, this lines up neatly with previous years’ Call of Duty marketing schedules.

Meanwhile, this image allegedly shows a screengrab of a Tesco’s listing for Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was leaked by Tesco’s and Target last week.

The listing is not available now, so there’s no proof it isn’t a PhotoShop job, but the text accompanying it is quite interesting:

“The franchise that has defined a generation of gaming is set to raise the bar once again with the all-new Call of Duty: Ghosts. Published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the original Call of Duty and the seminal Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise, delivering a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast, all powered by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine.”

Every Call of Duty game since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has used a modified version of the same engine. Although it has been significantly upgraded on multiple occasions, the use of the same core technology has been the focus of some criticism of the franchise.

Activision hasn’t made any official noises about the next Call of Duty, but we can probably expect it to launch on next-generation consoles when they drop at the end of the year.

    No. Modified version of it is used since First Call Of Duty. Since then Infinity Ward used modified version of Id Tech 3. Each new game had new effects.

    Black Ops 2 for example use the same fog and textures from Call Of Duty 2 just for fun fact. BO2 was the first game in the series that used Havoc…. in 2012.

    OH Yay another COD just what we need, I hate Activision, no new spyro or crash games but cod every year, ugh can’t show how much hatred I have for this company. And companies like Atlus, NIS, Namco Bandai having to stay alive whilst activiosn and EA can crap out the same game every year and receive billions. I wish the consumer was more intelligent, but no… I hate serving retards who play nothing but cod or FIFA and call themselves gamers… Just my two pence non this matter.

    if there is a new engine i will not buy this, frostbite sucks on ps3/x360(only on a beefed up pc that engine run good). i want a modified to the max of the engine they use now, it will run good with no framrate loss or other buggy crap…mw3/blkops2 was very good, if they can improve on that i am ok with it….

    May 1st? Sounds like Game Informer cover. CoD4 was June 2007 and MW2 was June 2009. This would be June 2013 so timing makes sense.

    I doubt it.

    There’s usually a big build up, with a long countdown, to the first teaser.

    Why would they just drop info so unexpectedly, and at such an apparently insignificant date?

    A new engine can help a big deal to bring the game up to better standards. My fear is that Battlefield 4 and Frostbite 3 will be poor on consoles, as is the tradition.

    @15 I realise why it looks odd. I meant to say that since BF is developed with very high-end PCs in mind and then down-scaled to consoles, The visual gap between COD and BF is not too huge on consoles.

    @17 They usually try to do it the week before it arrives in print mailboxes and the day the digital subscriptions are available. It used to be only on Thursdays now it’s on any day of the week it seems. 1st seems a little early, but they revealed the Witcher 3 cover on the 2nd business day in February (Feb 4th) so it’s not impossible.

    @18 Did you see the internal Activision tech demo for next gen faces? It’s safe to say that this will run on a next gen engine.

    You do know that these programmers are doing a phenomenal job of running said games on the limited hardware of consoles? It’s not as hard to make a super stunning game that runs on 3 SLIed Titans.

    Try running something on a console. THAT is good programming.

    This not being MW4 or a Black Ops sequel. This could be Activison testing the waters with a completely new engine. Could be interesting.

    Or I could be wrong, and they say its a new engine but really its still based on the same old Quake 3 engine just extremely modified as if it already isn’t.

    Its NOT good programming. Its called cutting corners.

    For example:

    Dev 1 says “Oh I would love to have lots of snow effects in this scene”

    Dev 2 replies “No, we can’t because we have already hit our limits of the machine”

    Dev 1 “Oh, ok what a shame. I guess we just won’t have to code that part then”

    Its a simple as that, with consoles especially after seven years of the same hardware it all becomes smoke and mirrors. The consoles can’t even render HD graphics they are all upscaled, someone had to come up with a new Anti aliasing mechanic due to the lack of VRAM in consoles and came up with FXAA which is only a post process filter that blurs the image… Again to HIDE the jaggies in console games. This is not good programming, its just people working with what they have got. 9/10 games are based and made with the same old engines. UE3, Quake 3, GameBryo, even games on the PS3 (exclusives) ALL use the same engine as Sony had to step in and help devs get the best out of the console. Hence why Uncharted, InFamous, etc all have the same tone and all contain the same horrid blur effects. Even though the engine is modified to fit the game its still the same base code.

    Good programming comes into the PC a lot more. Yeah sure you have rigs that have SLI’d TITANS (if you stupid enough to buy those overpriced cards) and yes you have all that horsepower at your disposal. But not everyone has a rig like that. So you have to code for a much much wider variety of PC configurations instead of one specific piece of hardware.

    I strongly prefer the use of an All new engine ( like what Kojima is doing with FOX on MGSV)over an old one regardless of the amount of modifications.
    If the new settings and cast rumor is true it can be very good and vitalizing for franchise.Next gen consoles can help too, because the entire industry have slowed down a bit with the exceptions like Bioshock Infinite,Beyond or Indie titles.
