Star Trek: The Video Game reviews arrive, scores inside

Friday, 26th April 2013 08:27 GMT By Dave Cook

Star Trek: The Video Game came our in North America on Tuesday to no reviews. But now they’ve started to appear online, and the news isn’t good.

As you can probably guess, we don’t have the game yet, as I suspect many sites don’t. It’s Walking Dead: Survival Instinct all over again, basically.

Here are the scores:

Polygon – 3/10
Hardcore Gamer Magazine – 1.5/5
CVG – 4.5/10
Digital Spy – 2/5
Videogamer – 3/10
Eurogamer – 6/10
OXM – 3/10

Got a score we’ve missed? Whack it in the comment box below and we’ll add it when we get a second.

Uff. That’s disheartening. I thought that was just me, but apparently a lot of people agree; this is not a good game. Considering they had much more time then your usual licensed game, there is no excuse for it to be the way it is.

It’s buggy as hell and not fun to play alone, or to play at all.

I think I’ll try to get Elite Force running again.

oh no!!!!!!! my girl and me waited for this game… big fans of the reboot :(

    This is bad :(

I changed my pre-order to the x360 version because the first videos showed better framerate and textures. what the fuck.

I will never trust dev diaries again.

And off the wishlist it goes, just like Aliens:CM did ….. oh well, had a bit more hope for this one. I was actually hoping for 7s, maybe a 6 here or there. Oh well, get to keep more money :)

Damn man. I saw the game late last year at an event and was pleasantly surprised. Something went horribly wrong.

Balls. I was ready for mediocre, but this looks…

Is there a curse on long-standing sci-fi series becoming games?

Can’t say I’m that surprised but I am actually disappointed.

I was hoping some of the reboots style and slickness would carry over, seems like that wasn’t the case.

@10: Slickness … that is something the game is definitely missing. Especially the animations. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

@YZ, Are you actually playing/played it then? Is it at all worth picking up, even a rental if you’re a fan of the reboot? I’m going to guess no by your initial reaction ;)

If someone didn’t cancel their preorder after the Shattner TV ad I have one thing to say: Pity the fool! This thing looks like a PS2 game and that rarely is a good sign.

I guess they spent almost the entire budget on the voice acting leaving nothing left for the quality of the game. Doh!

@12: I liked the reboot a lot too and was kind of excited for this game. But it’s simply not good. The gun play is not fun. The side-mission (stealth and non-lethal) are mostly ruined by either the AI (Spock gives my position away most of the time, makes me restart at the checkpoint) or the gameplay (the phaser overheats too fast).

The Gorn aren’t fun, the weapons are extremely boring, especially compared to the old Elite Force games. Sound is not good. Cutscenes are buggy and awkward mostly because of the lazy animations.

I guess you might have more fun with it playing coop. But singleplayer is just terrible. Spock is as dumb as a brick and forced me to restart at a checkpoint more than once.

The story isn’t interesting because the Gorn aren’t interesting.

    Mediocre rental, i’d say.

The biggest damage for me is to Digital Extremes. I liked them a lot, enjoyed Dark Sector, enjoyed Warframe’s beta and was willing to pick this up to support them.

Appears to be a big mistake. Thankfully I didn’t pay for the £40 steam price (which is gouging at its finest) and got myself a cheaper copy from shop-to.

Still, I won’t trust Digital Extremes again. I expected more from them, especially with the extended development time.

As usual, an amazing opportunity to create a great Star Trek game has been squandered on a company rushing to release in the name of publicity for another upcoming film. I purchased Star Trek – The Video Game even before any ratings or reviews were out. I put faith in some of the pre-release footage thinking this game was going to be great! Sorry but great does not fit in the description of this game.

I would like to add however that I did have some fun playing this game. The graphics were decent, aiming works well, sound and voice acting are good, but the Star Trek feel is missing. I like to feel immersed in a game and tried very hard to immerse myself in this game but just could not come close. I think this game is still a worthwhile purchase, but I’d wait until it hits the bargain bins if I was you.
