BioShock Infinite reviews begin, all the scores here

Monday, 25th March 2013 11:59 GMT By Dave Cook

BioShock Infinite reviews are now live. Get every score for Irrational Games’ stellar shooter right here.

Let’s not dick about here, this is a superb game. I finished it over the weekend and wrote a huge write-up here. Give it a read when you have time and remember, the game launches on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 from March 26.

Now then, those scores:

Got a score we’ve missed? Chuck it below and we’ll add it when we have time.

  1. JRNO

Has there ever been an exclusive review that’s scored a game lower than 9 out of 10?

dont know, what did Aliens: Colonial Marines get? ^^

  3. KAP

Exactly. With that said, it’s Irrational Games dude. For a publisher to fund a $200 game it’s no joke.

Would have been even better with multiplayer :-/

Publishers do ask for certain score limitations when they give out exclusive reviews or embargos. If your score is above 8, you are allowed to post it a week prior to release. If it is below 8, you have to wait until release date before publishing.

Movie studios do it openly. All the critics can write their thoughts BUT only the ones with appropriate score (in studio’s mind) are allowed to publish in most cases. Even celebrated films like Dark Knight have used this tactic.

@6 That’s happening less I noticed. Can’t actually remember the last time it happened to me personally. THQ did it with Saint’s Row 3 if I recall correctly.

This sounds like tinfoil hat speak.

    #7 2 years ago
  8. zinc

^ Maybe, but you notice how Dave said it’s happening *less*, not a complete rebuttal is it ;-)

  9. xxJPRACERxx

How much of that $200M is for paid reviews?

    #9 2 years ago
  10. Dave Cook

@9 Well I can’t say it doesn’t happen at all because I don’t know that for sure. It has never happened to me personally or to VG247 (thank christ), but the last instance I recall of it happening was for Saint’s Row The Third.

Hope this helps clarify what I meant.

Thanks for your reply and clarification. These exclusive reviews are fishy in and out of themselves. When IGN got this exclusive rev of BioShock, many members of the press reacted negatively. Even Geoff K was unhappy.

  12. Dave Cook

@12 I think it needs to be made clear though that – in my experience – so, I’m not speaking for everyone so please don’t rip me apart folks, sites don’t write reviews to get exclusives.

Sometimes publishers will ask for scores ahead of embargoes to then determine who will get to go early, not the other way around. Again – in my experience – it’s less suspicious than it seems from the outside looking in (Which it does, I understand).

But as far as I know – and I know a lot of game critics – there’s no dishonesty at play.

    94%, flop confirmed.

Games like Bioshock Infinite are a catch 22. There’s no way anyone would tell you if it was shit, even if it was. The hype is just too great.

I don’t think it will be shit, but 9/10 is just a foregone conclusion with games like these, sadly.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. Cobra951

@13: But you see that the problem remains either way, don’t you? The aggregate score on the game is going to be skewed upward until release, then it’s going to drop afterward. Advance reviews cannot be trusted to cover the whole opinion spread.

  16. Samoan Spider

To be fair though, there are some critically slammed games I’ve played over the years that turned out to be a lot of fun. Conversely I’ve played plenty of critically acclaimed games that didn’t float my boat. The best critic is yourself and this one is on my media blackout list that will get played whatever anyone says ;)

    #16 2 years ago
  17. DSB

@17 I think the fact that something like Mass Effect has gone from the first game to the third one without facing a real challenge is a stain on the profession.

It’s as if the publishers wet dream of throwing money at something, and adding production values is all it takes to put your game above any real criticism.

It’s certainly true that you and your friends are the best critics, but then my quesiton is, why can’t reviewers live up to that? It’s not hard to find gamers who are tough on the games they play, but somehow it’s pretty hard to find reviewers who are.

That kinda defeats the purpose. With movies it’s almost the opposite. People in general are very uncritical, and it’s the critics who really hold the directors and producers accountable for their work.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Samoan Spider

@18 I find it impossible to disagree with you there. That’s kind of the point now, I have gotten so used to it over the years I put very little stock in what critics say about games and tend to judge for myself. Even with online opinions of players now, its like looking at any statistics, you have to discount the outliers and try to take a mean average for yourself to get any sort of picture.
Yet as you say, with music and movies, those involved can get slammed for the most inane perceived faults by ‘critics’. With games, critics seem to desperately try not to bite the hand that feeds them.
High production values, extravagant launches and all the other money pits that publishers have just to create goodwill to cover things up led to Doritosgate, but that watershed moment hasn’t come for other places as it did for VG247.

Bioshock Infinite is a magical experience on every level. Despite a few glitches and a couple of issues with pacing in the later parts, this game is already a clear candidate for game of the year.
