Garriot back-pedals on “Most game designers just really suck” comment

Thursday, 21st March 2013 09:16 GMT By Dave Cook

Shroud of the Avatar developer Richard Garriot has explained that he wasn’t trying to ‘toot his own horn’ when he recently said that “most game designers just really suck”.

Garriot made the remark earlier this week in a PC Gamer interview, and suggested that here are few exceptional designers out there.

Now, Garriot has discussed the remark in a Gamasutra comment thread.

“My point was that game design is the hardest but also the most valuable skill to build in the industry. That every company lives and dies based on the talent of its game design team, and that as an industry we are not doing so well creating the talent we need in this industry because educational systems have not caught up in this area as well as programming and art.

“I was not trying to toot my own horn, rather state that game design is hard.”

Compare the original quote with the rebuttal and let us know what you think below? Was Garriot just making a harmless comment, or was he having a dig. You decide.

Thanks Eurogamer.

He didn’t actually backpedal, the article the “all designers suck” quote was taken from talked a lot about the sorry state of education when it comes to game design.

Sure, he was an ass about it, but I see his point, having played a lot of crap in the past few years. High budget, massively marketed crap.

Dude, you said: “I’ve met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am”

Even with the “a few exceptions” part, it sounds bad. Dear Lord British. Please shut the fuck up. There are a BILLION better designers than you out there.

Which just proves he doesnt know what he is talking about. The man is a tool. Its not so much designers but publishers. They are the ones who ‘dumb down’ games to suit the market then blame everyone else if their research failed.

Look at SWTOR. Under LucasArts, that game was shaping up to be a decent MMO – I played it lots during press previews, hands on events before it went to the large public shows and their plans looked sharp.

However, in came the big publisher, removed 80% of the good stuff and just cloned WoW essentially and then blamed everyone else when 1.7 million left it in record time.

Thanks to crowd funding, developers can now make games that they want to make and that is the difference. As for Mr Garriott – if he is that concerned, surely a ‘leading figure’ in the industry should put his money where his mouth is and actually support talented designers?

As if that isn’t bizarre enough, PC Gamers rebuttal just ventures even further into the uncanny valley.

“PC Gamer does not publish “gotcha” headlines. They’re gross.”

Because simply saying so somehow makes that true.
