“The console is just a console”: Sony explains lack of PS4 hardware during reveal

PS4 was revealed last night at a Sony event in New York City, but the console itself was nowhere to be seen. Shuhei Yoshida, president of worldwide studios at Sony Computer Entertainment has explained that the console itself is considered as less important than the DualShock 4, and therefore wasn’t shown.

Speaking with Polygon, Yoshida said, “The console is just a box. The controller was very important to show because it has the share button, but the console is just a console.”

When asked if the press would see the final PS4 rig at E3 2013, Yoshida replied, “We’re still trying to decide that.”

With the console releasing ‘Holiday 2013′ you would like to think that the rig will be shown in full at E3 at least.

What do you think?

Meanwhile, catch up on the PS4′s specs right here.

As a long-term Xbox supporter I’d actually say that MS are probably shitting their pants right now.

Sure, the PS4 games line-up *SO FAR* is pretty lacklustre, but it’s still early, and the platform itself is spot-on, IMO.

If all MS have to counter with is a weaker machine with a high res Kinect then frankly I don’t see them as viable competition.

Like i said, the reveal was to early. They should have waited. I dont know, it just didnt get me excited personaly. To be honest i cant remember much about it, i watched it last night. The only thing that sticks in my head was how good watch dogs looked, and thats a 3rd party game.
I dont know, we’ll have to see what microsoft deliver. Your right the kinect will prob be what they’ll be raving on about, and i cant stand the kinect.
But im sure they’ll anounce the next xbox when they are good and ready to and thats my point.
Just to say im not a xbox fanboy i have both consoles. just thought id do a bit of fishing lol.

At this point in time, the box matters more than anything to the vast majority of media outlets and consumers. They want to show/see the next console.

It isn’t ready.

@53 Eurogamer responds to the MS trash talk:

“P.S. Another thing that is swirling around my inbox this morning is a tweet from Larry Hryb at Xbox having a little dig at last night’s performance. “Announce a console without actually showing a console? That’s one approach,” he zinged. Sure Larry. And another approach is to launch a console with a 68 per cent failure rate. Be still. We’ll get to you soon enough.”
