Somewhat amusingly, the latest game from the developer of Blacklight is called Daylight.
Daylight casts players in the role of an unnamed woman who has woken up in a dark building. A psychological horror title, it features procedurally-generated environments, meaning every playthrough will be different.
Thankfully, each go-round is designed to last about half an hour, during which the player can uncover clues to the story, which was written by Jessica Chobot.
“The player doesn’t have a name. We don’t give any backstory on the player. She literally just wakes up and you need to find your way through, but there’s a lot of story elements,” creative director Jared Gerritzen said.
“Different players will have a totally different experience. You’re essentially a rat in a cage, but the cage is an asylum and it’s scary as hell. You need to find your way out, and each time you do it it’s completely different.”
Players are equipped with a cellphone, but receive no weapons. The phone can act as a warning when phantoms are around, but will also occasionally be “possessed” and play flashback media. The phone has a video camera and compass, and can be used as a torch; if you’re willing to sacrifice a little light, you can put it in UV mode and use this to retrace your own footsteps.
Other light sources, like flares and glowsticks, are available, and Zombie seems very pleased with Unreal Engine 4’s capacity for dynamic, real-time lighting effects.
Daylight is expected on Steam in 2013 for $20 or less, and will be followed by additional chapters. Hit the link above to check out a few screenshots.
