Disney Q1: Interactive division back in the black
The Walt Disney Company has released its first quarterly report of the current fiscal year, showing significant improvement in its recently unprofitable Interactive division.
Disney Interactive posted a profit of $9 million. It doesn’t sound like much, but compared to the $28 million loss in the same quarter of 2012, following several years of successive losses, it’s a serious win.
The division reported revenue of $291 million, up 4% year-on-year increase.
As well as its ongoing withdrawl from the console business, which has seen Disney slowly turn the Interactive division around, the company said cheap social purchases and licensed Japanese mobile games are responsible for the upswing.
Little was said of Disney’s recent releases Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. The pair are believed to have sold below expectations, and series developer Junction Point has been closed.
Moving forward, Disney has high hopes for Skylanders rival Disney Infinity.
