Next-gen Xbox detailed in last issue of Xbox World – rumor

The last issue of Xbox World promises to go out with a bang as it contains eight pages of everything there is to know about the next Xbox console.

According to the magazine’s editor in chief Dan Dawkins, everything revealed in the issue pertaining to “Durango” will “be revealed long before E3 in June,” he told CVG.

Xbox World claims the next console from Microsoft will simply be called “Xbox” and introduces Kinect 2.0, runs Blu-ray discs, features directional audio, TV output/input, an “innovative controller” and AR glasses will be made available later on down the road.

The dev kits currently contain a CPU with “four hardware cores, each divided into four logical cores” and 8GB of RAM.

Xbox World’s last issue, dated January 2013, should be hitting newsstands in December alongside the last issue of PSM3 which also promises a full exposé on PS4.

It’s going to contain a tablet style controller preloaded with Smart Glass.

It’s going to be revolutionary, oh wait.

8 gb of ram. Now that is cool.

My previous PC. 8 GB is enough for everything.

Damn those are some big words, hope it’s true. I just hope they keep the always on connection crap off of it.

Speaking of..does anyone use backward compatibility here? I recently played some GTA:San Andreas. The only games I’ve really gotten into this Gen, from last Gen, are Ace Combat and Tourist Trophy.

@9 It’s funny you say that i just recently tooled around on my old copy of GTA: San Andreas too! I bought the box set of GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas that came out back on first Xbox. Only thing that sucks is none of the old cheats work lol.

Back on topic, I think Sony should also call their next console “Playstation” simply. Works for Apple yeah?

I can’t imagine MS opting for Blu-Ray not after they have held off so long on the 360…

@11

Yep, would make sense.

The brands are that established now, I think using Xbox and Playstation would work.

It would actually finally show MS’s true colours. They always ŵere going to use the Xbox as a Trojan horse media device, hence the original name.

Now, with all there media focus, it’s all coming together.

Sony might have it more difficult. Many people don’t really associate the Playstation brand as anything other than gaming. Not so helpful in the oncoming media war.

Nintendo choose Wii U to ride on the success of Wii, but I was hoping they’d have just gone for the plain ‘Nintendo’ name.

Old skool style! Everyone used to call the NES the Nintendo! :)

Also, I wonder how much it will be. With Kinect 2, a new controller AND über powerful console, you’ve got to be talking £500…

Just waiting for the subscription service.

Sony can’t afford to put out another £500 console at the moment, it would kill them off.

@12 Blu-ray has become affordable, and the disks will do good for games because they can hold so much data, faster r/w, better display, etc

As for BR in xbxnxt, they had better be able to have faster load times w/o the need to isnstall everything the way PS3 does.

Which way you tilting next gen?

Gonna stick with the Wii U and PC for a while, or do you think your going all in with MS or Sony?! :)

@OG

I think so. The older BR (I liked your way it was shorter) gets, the better people learn to control the tech to their advantage. PS3 launched with BR, that was the best they new what to do with it 8 (9?) years ago. Better BR disk drive tech has come along since then, so i have decent hopes. But like i said, what i DON’T want to see, is always on connection NOR a built-in kinect, add those 2 things together equals big brother to me.

Remember, Microsoft rejected Blu-Ray as part of a chess game in their larger war between electronics giants. Microsoft was backing the HD-DVD, which everyone knew was doomed, but it still wasn’t about to help Sony get over in that brief but bitter format battle.

The reason they never embraced BR midstream is because it would have involved an external peripheral, splitting the userbase and killing the Xbox as a console, for no real benefit to them (MS doesn’t get a cut of the BR movies you buy). It was a much smarter play for MS to stick to DVD9s and use their greater install base to force developers to make games for the specs of the 360 and let PS3 owners fume.

Now that that war is long since resolved, of course the next Xbox will have Blu Ray. If they’re stubborn cusses they could try the Nintendo route and create their own slightly askew proprietary storage, but the result will be the same.

And yes, BR on Xbox would mean MS would be paying a license fee to the consortium that developed BR, of which Sony is a member. It’s not really significant against the larger strategic questions, however.

I think both systems are going to be price at $399. I think that is they highest they can go. MS is going to be a little bit more, when you factor in Xbox live.

8gb of ram is great if true. But 4gb of ram is way more than enough. Lets hope Sony makes a system that’s easy to developed for, so we won’t have to hear to these fucking cry baby developers complain how hard it is to develop for.

Well, if this is close to the truth, that could be really awesome. But I’m still not convinced. The new Xbox with a powerful tablet/netbook or a complete new pc. Time will tell, but this sounds truly awesome, 2013 can’t come soon enough!

I agree with the name playstation said earlier. In Japan they can’t name it PS4 due to the number 4 being bad or something stupid, which why they have this gay naming convention called orbis. They best not name it that, I still think the PSvita should of been called PSP2.

I don’t think that all the Ram will be for Gaming, I guess some Ram will be reserved for the OS. Multitasking will become more Importance with Multimedia-Stuff becoming a bigger Part of the System.

But, however, My PC is doing Fine with Multiplattform Titels. I don’t care about the Tech behind the Console, they need some Exclusive Titels to make me buy a new Console.

Why do people associate Blu-ray with just Sony?

Blu-ray was backed by Sony..Yes but not the only Company to back it.

The Blu-ray Disc format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, with more than 180 member companies from all over the world. The Board of Directors currently consists of:

Apple Computer, Inc.
Dell Inc.
Hewlett Packard Company
Hitachi, Ltd.
LG Electronics Inc.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
Sharp Corporation
Sony Corporation
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
TDK Corporation
Thomson Multimedia
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney Pictures
Warner Bros. Entertainment

…so yes there is quite more muscle behind blu-ray then just Sony.

HD-DVD which was backed by Microsoft had also some of it’s own backers.

The HD DVD Promotion Group

ALMEDIO INC.
ALPINE ELECTRONICS, INC.
BANDAI VISUAL CO., LTD.
Broadcom Corporation
CANON INC.
CMC Magnetics Corporation
Corel Corporation
D&M Holdings Inc.

FUJI PHOTO FILM CO., LTD.

TOSHIBA CORPORATION
TOSHIBA DIGITAL FRONTIERS INC.
Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corporation
TOSHIBA-EMI LIMITED TRENDY Corporation
Ulead Systems, Inc.
Universal Pictures
Warner Home Video Inc.

Thus the format war started and Blu-ray won and the HD DVD format and group was dissolved in 2008.

Microsoft would be smart to move to Blu-ray and given Blu-ray is replacing DVDs and making their way into the living room, Xbox as a home entertainment system would be void without it.

I can’t believe consoles are still using physical media, my PC hasn’t needed it since 2008, everything is purchased through steam. The only advantage to physical media is cheap games, I bought a PS3 in 2010 and I have loads of great games for less than £10 each.

#33

NiceFellow
18/11/12, 3:56 pm

@34 from a global perspective probably 50% or more of the addressable market requires physical media – so it’s not really a surprise they still need physical media if you think about it.

The next round of consoles will absolutely need physical options to compete globally. After that…? Well, depending on progress maybe they could drop physical media but that time sure isn’t here yet.

Sure, I guess if one of the big three was willing to sacrifice that market and focus purely on US, UK and a few other markets they could take a risk with digital only but clearly none of them have the appetite for it.

It’s one thing to have relatively small apps on something like the iPad, but 10GB plus games (and increasingly 20GB plus games) require either a really solid internet infrastructure or physical media.

Just for fun:

360: 22.4 GB/s + eDRAM for framebuffer
PS3: 25.6 GB/s main memory BW + 22.4 GB/s graphics memory BW, no eDRAM

GTX 680: 192.2 GB/s :P

@36

GTX 680 on its own is twice the price of Xbox 360 ( about £400 on amazon for example ).

Then memory, motherboard etc..

Shock horror, something that costs 5 times as much is better than a cheaper option…

Also, you just ripped those stats NEOGAF / Kotaku.

They were inspecting the Wii U memory specs.

Devkit specs aren’t indicative of retail specs.

Backwards compatibility is presumably unlikely in Durango, as the rumours say the architecture’s moving from PowerPC to x86. Unless they write some sort of ninja emulator.

@36

That’s a completely meaningless comparison. GTX 680 came out six years after the consoles.

Just for fun:

1990 PC: 320×240
Xbox 360: 1920×1080

The only thing that i want is they do avoid the always connected part to play singleplayer games, from both sony and microsoft, specs wise i dont mind, i only want an improvement of what we have avaliable today, something more than that is a win in my eyes.

@Marco: thank you for the link! there´s a pic of the actual console! i hope it will look like that. absoluteley loving the design. instantly hyped now.

that said, i hope they wont change too much about the gamepad. the 360 pad is almost perfect imho. if the new xbox will have a wiiu/smartglassesque controller i really do hope there will be a classic option just like on wii u too.
