Dark Souls pendant mystery resolved

Monday, 5th November 2012 23:31 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki has finally explained the purpose of the mysterious pendant item which players can choose as a starting gift.

Speaking with IGN, the director confirmed that the pendant literally has no effect or use.

“When it comes to the pendant, I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank,” he admitted.

The pendant is one of a number of items the player can choose when creating a character, including a skeleton key, a ring which allows you to speak to a specific character, a small cache of bombs, and a healing potion.

Although the game describes the pendant as as a “trinket”, and says it has “no effect, but fond memories comfort travellers”, the complicated nature of Dark Souls’ canon and systems led to much speculation as to its use, especially as Miyazaki had said it was the gift he’d choose.

Interest in Dark Souls has been renewed recently by the release of a PC version and a significant piece of DLC.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

It’s not completely useless. You can trade it with Snuggly the Crow for a Souvenir of Reprisal. You’ll need as much of this as possible if you’re a Blade of the Darkmoon.

I think everyone is missing the point why he waited to reveal the “Truth” about the pendant until this point….. Now this prank is by no means a simple one just to give us some laughs, there’s a really big and deep explanation to why he did everything he did (Miyazaki) but ill try to keep it short.

    This mainly involves three things:

*The interview he did before the game released stating he would chose the pendant

    *The new DLC

*The last boss from the DLC Manus

Now let me explain, the pendant got really famous when miyazaki said he would chose the pendant for “role playing purpose” this of course made all the hardcore players who specially love lore search every inch of the game for a purpose or meaning to this pendant only to find nothing.

Now fast forward to the DLC release, something funny happened, to access the new content you need to find and kill a golem who drops a “broken half pendant” and upon reading the description you find that someone is obsessed with it and its frantically looking for said broken pendant….. see something familiar here? :D

OH but its not over yet! if you make some research about manus, the being who drags you into the past to get his precious pendant back, you find that he once was actually human, but he got corrupted with darkness and ugly human emotions one of them being of course OBSESSION (it also involves the “dark soul” but that’s another story).

So there you have it guys miyazaki is a freaking genius, a sadist and a prankster. He also teached us a lesson…..or DID HE?! all we know is that there’s alot of hardcore players missing and there’s an overpopulation of manus in this world.

P.S. sorry for the bad English :(
