Nintendo has said it hopes to sell 5.5 million Wii U consoles and 24 million units of software for the new console by March 31.

This is the first time the firm has announced a sales target for the console, noted Siliconera.

Earlier today, the firm released its financials for the first half of 2012, and reported a loss of ¥27.9 billion.

Nintendo also reported 3DS has moved 22 million units since release and 64.45 million titles for the handheld.

Lifetime unit sales of Wii currently sit at 97.2 million, and its successor launches on November 18 in the US and November 30 in the UK.

That seems so low to me, maybe because of the Wii figures.

5.5 is decent for the launch console.

Look at the Vita. That thing can’t move more than 3 million units…

That’s quite a high attach rate they are aiming for. Presumably it’ll count Nintendoland and download titles too.

That’s a reasonable standard to set at. With their dedicated they should see that sooner rather than later. I don’t think they will steal the casual market like they did before unless they pull that Wii strategy of low store inventory making it a hot demand item.

I remember taking a friend of mine to a wally world to try and buy his wii. They only got 2 in stock and I got up at 5am to get him there early.
