OTT: VG247 breaks 1.1 million monthly unique users

Monday, 1st October 2012 09:22 GMT By Staff

We did it. And so did you. VG247 has moved past the million monthly user mark, recording more than 1.1 million unique visitors and 3 million page views in September.

VG247, Britain’s first and only 24-hour games news site, passed a major traffic milestone in September by recording 1,105,782 unique visitors.

The page view count for the month was 3,078,455. The metrics are internal, taken from Google Analytics.

Said editor Patrick Garratt: “When we launched in 2008, 1 million monthly unique users was our target. Achieving our primary goal has been the result of hard work from an incredible team, the members of which have nothing but my utmost respect and thanks.

“But we’d be nothing without our readers, and I can’t express my gratitude to our audience enough. If the crowd engaging with us on a daily basis were any more ‘core,’ I think we’d have a lava issue.”

VG247 launched in February 2008, and provides round-the-clock games news reporting from editors in the UK, America, Australia and France.

Erm, read it more carefully? The link you just posted bears out my contention exactly. That you can have PASSED something, but you cannot move PASSED something. You move PAST something. That’s what it says. Which is what I said.

The example it gives is thus:

“The ball sped past the goalkeeper.”

Something moving past something else is always ‘past’. You cannot ‘move passed’ anything. Ever. It’s not correct English.

    Congrats, by the way.

Awesome news! I just hope community remains as good as it is now.
Did any progress happen on that japanese editor thing. I know its not the most popular demand but would definitely provide more readers and make site better place for news overall imho.

    Keep up the good work!!!

Does 1 million users mean we can get a mobile version that doesn’t make phones explode? Please? :D

  27. Dave Cook

@24 no word just yet as Gematsu has stepped in and is filling the void left by Andriasang. We’re always open to new ideas though. Keep watching this space.

Thanks again for the feedback guys, it’s been hard work but worth it to see you enjoying the site :)

What have you guys made of our increase in features, impressions and interviews?

  36. Karooo

@Dave, I’m not really a fan of your titles, but you are an asset to VG247. No doubt about it. Keep up the good work!

#36 great all around Dave, really well done, especially the “disguised” reviews

  38. Dave Cook

@37-38 thanks guys, good to know. Karooo, do you mean my feature titles or my news headlines? When it comes to news I’m still experimenting with how to make the site more visible on Google, while shaking off old habits that came with my old job. Hopefully they’ll get better over time :)

Yeah I’d agree – the news headlines can be a bit sensationalist at times. Occasionally something will be taken out of context or given an improper skew (I’m not talking about you in particular Dave, it’s a site-wide thing).
Once or twice I’ve spotted (hastily removed) duplicate articles, reporting on news already covered.

Still my favourite gaming website though!

  41. Chockster

TRUEFACT: Over nine hundred and eighty seven thousand of these visitors came here for Pat’s Borderlands piece.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. DSB

Let the stories speak for themselves Dave. Once you put “Faliszek” and “Kickstarter” in the title, it’s already big news google wise.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Dave Cook

@43 I’ll admit man that it’s a bad habit I picked up at my old job. They were so forceful making you sensationalise that it was actually depressing to work there.

Just as long people know I don’t do these things purely for traffic. That’s one of the main reasons I left my old job.

    #43 2 years ago
  44. OrbitMonkey

@44, But surely that’s why Pat employed you!

    #44 2 years ago
  45. Dave Cook

@45 nah man not purely. There’s ways of using keywords and such that aren’t cheap, and for the best part we do that, I sometimes slip due to those old habits, it annoys me as much as it does you when I do it, trust me.

Plus, I was hired for more than that dude ;)

  46. Da Man

How many of those are the same person?

    You know it’s true.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. Dave Cook

@47 none of them are. That 1.1 million figure are all individuals. We have tools that track the site stats.

I do not post very often, but I follow your news every day, imho the best place to get’em in the whole Internet. I also get a lot of fun from the community (even though I don’t see Erth posting as much as before, a shame because the PC/console flame wars are really funny).

Definitely kudos to you all guys.

You know… I don’t want to dampen your enthusiasm too much but… unless Google Analytics uses tracking cookies (which I don’t think it does), you probably have more like 100K unique users thanks to dynamic IPs.

And IF you had 1.1M unique users and 3M page views… 3 page views per user? No. The average for the regular user is much higher. Which would mean that you have hundreds of thousands of people who look at your site and never come back.

Maybe it means more to you to attract 1M people, no matter whether they actually USE your site but I would prefer 10K who actually care what I publish. Of course… I suppose that would not help you with ads. Oh well…
