Star Wars 1313 dev predicts graphics will be “indistinguishable from reality” in ten years

Monday, 6th August 2012 01:26 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Industrial Light & Magic’s Kim Libreri has made a bold prediction for the future of real-time interactive graphics.

“It’s an interesting time because with modern computer graphics hardware. The way its going, it’s gonna be pretty hard to tell the difference between something that is interactive and rendered in real-time, and something that was done for an animated TV show, or even a live action thing,” the visual effects supervisor said in an interview with CVG.

ILM is collaborating with LucasArts on Star Wars 1313, which is pursuing a cinema-like aesthetic with an emphasis on motion capture and strong vocal work. It’s not photo-realistic, obviously, but in terms of when we might see such a thing, Libreri said a single decade might be enough.

“Ten years from now, I’m pretty sure, if you extrapolate where we’ve gone with the console generations and the changes in video and ATI hardware,” he said.

“We’re getting to the point right now [with real-time rendered graphics] where we’re matching the quality of an animated movie seven or eight years ago, and another ten years from now, it’s just going to be indistinguishable from reality.”

Watch the full interview below for some snippets of gameplay footage. Star Wars 1313 has not been dated beyond a vague 2013, and LucasArts is yet to announce platforms.

Thanks, Edo!

Translation: This is a next gen game. Not for 360 or PS3 really.

Why 10 years ? I assume it will happen when next-gen consoles launch

#2: Unreal Engine 4 is designed for next-gen, and that’s not even close to real-life graphics yet.

And yet Mass Effect 3 graphics are so bad that you feel like that you’re about to throw up.. Unless you load PC mods and textures. Then it transforms into a beautiful experience.

I really hope this is for next generation platforms and not scaled back for PS3 and 360
