For an official Super Mario game lots of 8s and a few 9s is not exactly ‘looking good’.
I’m not saying it’s not a great game, it clearly must be, but go and have a look at Galaxy and NSMB1 and then tell me these scores are what Ninty would have wanted.

@1 I agree with you.
The flip-side of course, is that even Nintendo’s second tier platforming efforts are better than 90-95% of the stuff which is out at the moment.

Hmmm even the ONM review isn’t exactly glowing.
Guess this is going to be a good Mario game as opposed to an excellent one. Still, I’m looking forward to playing this as it is meant to be one of more challenging Mario games in decades.

If Call of Duty has been driven into the ground as a franchise, surely this has too.

I don’t know about that Fin. Super Mario tends to go some very weird places.
I remember playing Sunshine and just thinking “What the fuck happened here?”. You can’t exactly accuse Call of Duty of surprising you like that, even though I like it just fine for what it is.
I just think it’s crazy that they haven’t done anything like 64. My wife picked it up on WiiWare and it’s still a brilliant game.
Galaxy kinda bungles it up with the need to warp or turn everything.
They do milk it quite a bit though. Smash Bros Brawl and Soccer being case and point. And it’s made a lot worse by the constant 60 dollar pricetag.
If you don’t buy your Wii games on Ebay, you’re getting ripped off.

Kind of the way of the franshice tho. Be it CoD, Mario or anything else. Lest in most cases, the Nintendo franchises do things(gameplaywise) that keeps one release different from another. Sadly, with this game, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I said that this looked like the worst (marquee) Mario game I’d seen in ages, and going by the initial reviews, I think the Metacritic will eventually back me up on that.

I really loved NSMB on the DS, it was a tribute to the classic games and I really enjoyed the retro-style gameplay. Not sure if I wanna buy a 3DS for more of the same tho.

The Famitsu score is meaningless in my view, but that EG Spain 9/10 bodes very well.
