Gaikai and Samsung sign Smart TV cloud gaming deal

Samsung has announced a deal with Gaikai which launch its Samsung Cloud Gaming service on its Smart TVs.

Those who own a Samsung's internet-connected Smart TV will be able to stream and play games using the cloud service, according to Gamasutra.

Samsung will launch the service via its 2012 LED Smart TVs, 7000 series and up, and according to Gaikai, the TVs technology would allow the service to run on older model Smart TVs from the manufacturer as well.

"We've talked to all of [the console makers]. Literally all of them. I wouldn't want to be a console without cloud gaming. Let's put it that way. I think that all of them are going to need this technology," Gaikai CEO David Perry told the site.

Perry continued: "Did you guys realize that Call of Duty was the biggest launch in entertainment history? And none of you participated? None of you? Not a single one? Literally all of you?," he asked the TV manufacturers. "Nobody participated in the biggest entertainment launch in history. Don't you think it's probably time to start changing that?

"The only way you can change it is to use cloud gaming. The only way you can put the absolute best that the game industry can make on your devices is with cloud gaming. If you want, you can put lame games on TV. You could put Call of Duty trivia or something like that, or you can put the real thing. If you do, you're going to use cloud gaming."

It was rumored last month the service was close to brokering a deal with Sony, with some rumors suggesting a buy-out from the console and TV manufacturer - although the cloud service being bought wasn't mentioned by name, many assumed Gaikai was a possibility.
