Dead Space 3 co-op confirmed, competitive multiplayer dropped

The latest Game Informer (via GAF) has confirmed co-op for Dead Space 3, but the competitive multiplayer that was introduced in Dead Space 2 has been scrapped altogether.

The co-op will, indeed, feature Issac and Carver, the dude from the graphic novel video earlier last week. Co-op will include new cutscenes and interactions outside the single-player. Visceral said in GI that if you only decide to go solo rather than partner up, “you’ll hear everything you need to hear to get the whole story.”

Visceral has also added a cover system to the game, a first for the series. There’s now also universal pickups for ammo around the world, which is confirmed to be Tau Volantis.

New Necromorph enemies will debut like Fodder, Feeders and something called by Visceral the Snow Beast, as well as a 30 story Necromorph centipede called the Nexus.

Feeders are described as “what happens when a human isn’t actually infected by a Swarm or by a Divider head,” according to Visceral, “but by necessity ends up eating the flesh of a turned necro.” For the Fodder, depending on how you kill them, they will transform into two different Necromorphs.

Visceral’s said in the magazine it’s aiming to have DS3 less linear than both 1 and 2, adding it wants the player to be able to find large environments and “unique beta missions” that aren’t required to complete the game.

Dead Space 3 is set for a February launch, according to GI. More details will be announced at EA’s press conference tomorrow evening. More on that here.

Cover fucking system? Universal ammo? Just change the name to Gears and get on with it.
Really, REALLY disappointed.

Dead Space 3: Influenced by Mass Effect 3.

One day, the mighty health pack will return and all will be good again.

not liking the idea of a cover system one bit. A fundamental game-changer in no good way. Unless sense holds out after all, and actually, EA got the destructible cover formula from DICE and added it?

Cover can work but only if done right. Same can be said about this co-op. Horror games are all about isolation which Co-op in the sense of Gears or RE5 destroys that aspect making the fear effect non-existent. But if they maybe have it so that each person has their own thing that help the overall goal much like how the older RE had done it for example when Jill got infected and Carlos went to look for the cure something to that effect only each person would have their own content and do their own part. Sure you can have parts where you both do something at the same time but not the entire game.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

@7

That’s rather clueless of you to say.

ME3 on its harder difficulties doesn’t have regenerating health (just regenerating shields), and it didn’t have Universal ammo, either.

@10

I think you’re incorrect, there. A cover system can’t work in Dead Space 3 without radically changing what the game is. A cover system is based around the idea that an enemy in general holds back and takes potshots at you from behind their cover. It only worked in parts of Mass Effect because the enemies were designed like that – Cerberus, for instance.

But here’s the funny thing – cover was worth shit all when they introduced the reapers. They had a huge amount of close-quarters combat and teleporting critters, and that completely broke the cover system. If you tried to use the cover system on the harder difficulty levels of Mass Effect 3 against the reapers, you’d die.

The only way to counter the reapers was to keep on your feet and keep moving. This was also true of Dead Space, because in Dead Space you had enemies which were mostly focused around melee, and were kind of tough. So you spent too much time sprinting around in order to even think of cover.

However, in Gears of Space 3, they’ve apparently changed this so that the necromorphs have guns, and hang back taking potshots at you. This is why people think that this is a horrible idea, because it changes what the necromorphs are, intrinsically. And thus it changes the sort of gameplay one would find in Dead Space. I agree that this is a bad thing.

THat is happening in this game. You will be fighting unitology supporters. Necromorphs are still the same way as they were in the previous games they won’t be using cover.

Universal ammo sounds like a change for the better, and could actually create more strategic depth if they do it the right way.

The cover system sounds like its completely missing the point though. The idea makes me seriously nervous.

@13 Since the unitology will be shooting at you, you do realise if the game didn’t have a cover system then people would actually moan that it should have had one?

Cover system is the least of the problems I see so far.

PvP in the second game was horribly stuck on… But with with some work it could have been decent. Its quite a shame they arent even going to try and make something good out of it.

@14 It’s supposed to be a horror game. It’s supposed to be tense and unnerving. Adding a cover system (and humans for that matter) sounds completely counterproductive to what makes the games so good in the first place.

A cover system?! Wow. I thought co-op was bad news. Way to take a great game and ruin it by including people shooting at you. Thanks a lot Visceral.

@19 In the original creators defense, the people who originally made the game don’t even work for EA anymore. So really, it’s Visceral in name only.

Even if Cover system is going to be good, it’s going to destroy what was good about Original Dead Space Gameplay.

Cover system works for many games (some of them are fantastic like Uncharted), but let other games do that and do your own thing. Gosh… Why?

Resident Evil 5 had nice co-op and even they never used cover system.

It’s all very well saying ‘it’s got co-op’, but does that mean onlin or split screen?

Tbh, if it doesn’t have split screen, it’s not proper co-op. I actually have friends I like to play games with in the same house. I don’t like telling them that in order to hang out and play games, we need to stay in separate buildings and buy some headsets.

Have any of EA Multiplayer games had splitscreen? The likelihood of that happening is slim to none.

You cant lock away split screen with a pass.

They won’t do that its too much work when a Pass does the job.

Actually, despite being totally shit, army of two had split screen.

And fuck the online pass – doesn’t stop gears or halo doing split screen.

Lazy developers are lazy.

Will this game be splitscreen coop? I won’t be buying two copies of the game just to play with my little brother. and I don’t have a gold account, so it would be pointless to buy two games anyway…

My understanding is that this time there are human enemies, so having cover makes sense in those situations. No need for it against most of the other enemies though, as they’re all up in your grill the whole time.

I have this pre-ordered and I kinda have to play it and know what happens next in the DS universe, but I’m well aware that the magnificence of the first game will never be matched. Rather we’ll got a competent 3rdPS with high production values that continues the story. That’s enough for the purchase for me.

I’m not arsed one way or the other about the co-op to be honest.

Someone said to me: ” this isn’t the horror action you are looking for!” and made a swiping gesture. I was left with the idea that this is not the game I’m looking for ….
