Wii U rumors – Metroid URE3, VoD services, Android OS

Thursday, 26th April 2012 16:12 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

French site Nintendotown has posted a new batch of Wii U rumors, one of which is rather plausible due to previous comments made by Nintendo.

First up is the rumor that a new Metroid is in the works for the console and is being built using Unreal Engine 3. This is plausible, and the site says a tech demo of the game was shown in cooperation with Nintendo’s Retro Studios. The firm is also supposedly working on a new Star Fox game for the system. At least, that is what we gleaned from the Google translation.

Another rumor the site noted which was posted on Adweek, was that Nintendo is in talks with various partners regarding video on demand services. Wii owners can already watch Netflix offerings on the console, but this rumor implies a built-in application on the console’s dashboard similar to Xbox 360 and PS3. Like the aforementioned rumor, this one is definitely plausible considering Nintendo has been hinting around at such content. Still, the firm has been a bit evasive so expect to hear more about the UI and apps at E3.

The final rumor posted in this little round-up was in relation to news the firm has integrated Android OS on Wii U. This one, we’re not really sure about, and honestly find it extremely far-fetched. Then again, in the world of gaming news, nothing really surprises us anymore.

You can view the information posted on the site through the link.

Thanks, GoNintendo.

A new metroid game done by retro is great news, now i wonder it will be 3D like the last retro games, or it will be a classic 2D take, i would love to see something like metroid fusion on the Wii U at some point too.

Bro, I think you mean to say “shitty sub-hd console games are so shit”. They’re building it using an six year old engine. For someone like yourself, that’s akin to going back to Mode7 graphics, surely.

^wrong OtherM sucked. The prime series was one of the best ever. Played them to death and prime1 was the reason I got an GC back in the days.

A new Metroid Prime would be AWESOME. Seriously great games and probably the only Nintendo franchise I care about.

I kinda lost all hope for the WiiU when I heard it couldn’t run Crysis 3…(thought it was supposed to be on par with 360 if not superior)

P.S. They need to reboot Killer Instinct, Wave Race (no good water racing games this gen), Battletoads, F-Zero, and Pilotwings. Besides the usual Metroid, Mario, and Zelda ofcourse..

P.P.S Oh, and I’d much prefer a SuperMetroid sequel done in 2.5D-ish kick ass side scrolling graphics as opposed to another 3D game. Just my opinion.

^ If it runs metroid on UE3, who needs CE3?! ;-)
And for the SuperMetroid 2.5 – now THAT would be great, as I love Shadow Complex and cannot wait for Deadlight.

why would this be a rumour when Metroid is one of Nintendo’s key franchises?

More likely an Android runtime like the Windows Bluestacks application and what Blackberry did, so this would allow Android apps to run on Nintendo OS if there’s any truth to it.

#11 I think the rumour is that is being developed by Retro, if i dont recall wrong retro said that it was done with the Metroid franchise, and that they were doing new projects, i think thats the big news here, not the metroid game per se

That’s the problem with rumours though, what is true and what ain’t? I remember how amazing some Wii U rumours sounded and none of that seems to be true now if we are to believe some developers and Nintendo, who more or less…confirmed it.

Why not drop the “Prime” and go back to Metroids roots? That’s what i say. Same thing with Metal Gear Solid. Drop the “Solid” and go back to it’s roots. Seems common sense to me at this point in the game..

Love the metroid series, though I don’t think Corruption was quite as good as the first two. The first one stood out especially, was such an intriguing story exploring that planet.

OK guys as a French-American lemme clarify a couple things. The rumor does NOT state that the upcoming Metroid is being developed on UE3, but that it is being developed by Epic Games. It goes on to assert that the Japanese Garden demo showed at E3 2011 ran on a tweaked version of UE3 made by Epic and Retro Studios. I personally doubt that Epic is really making the next Metroid but hey, Epic has publicly expressed their admiration for the Wii U so I’d say there’s a small chance.

They wouldn’t run Android on it, not in an open sense at least. Ninty would like to earn some money from their past efforts but there’s simply too much emulator stuff on Android for it to be worth it.

Maybe they should look back to some great games for Wii U. Wave race, 1080 snowboarding, Killer instinct and other great games from the past. Lylat wars? A Goldeneye update (NOT THE ONE WITH DANIEL CRAIG!) If they still have the copyrights that is. Lets also have more of the great games like The Legend of Zelda. Not the cell shaded Wind Waker or the strange rendered, but still shaded Skyward Sword, but mor like the greater games of Orcaina of Time and The Twighlight Princess. Nintendo have a long history of great games and they should update them to modern times. Not just Mario or Donkey Kong. Update and expand on the ideas that will carry them onwards and upwards.

okk i don’t know if people will agree with me but who thinks that they should make an online multiplayer versus thing for metroid?? i mean they put versus on the GC and Wii version so you know how come they can’t put it online. personally i think metroid would get soooo much rep if we found out it was online dont cha think. i mean just imagine playing worldwide with people online in metroid.
